There's a ton of great books in this thread - if you guys liked Card and Bradbury, try The World Treasury of Science Fiction from 1989, edited by David G. Hartwell. It includes some gems like Stanislaw Lem, Philip K. Dick, Kono Tensei, Heinlein, and others who aren't always in the scifi category, like Jorge Luis Borges and John Updike. That should let you find what styles you enjoy.

The short stories of Frederik Pohl are wonderful ("The Day the Icicle Works Closed" for instance) and check out Roger Zelazny (scifi: The Doors of His Face, The Lamps of His Mouth, and Other Stories or fantasy/scifi: Nine Princes in Amber).

currently reading The Unknown Matisse by Hilary Spurling for a change of pace :D

If you haven't read these and like Fantasy you are wrong -

A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

    Some more hardcore fantasy:

Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson

Yes. Although the later ones have their Anvilicious parts. I enjoyed the "Shadow" series, which follows Bean, more than the "Speaker" series which follows Ender past the first book.

Fair warning. Other books by Card are Author Tracts such as the "Homecoming Saga" and I think everything past the first book of the Alvin Maker series is absolute tripe mixed with Author Filibusters.

On that note, I am confused as to how George R.R. Martin got away with blatantly ripping off the War of the Roses, except that it was an interesting period of history and I guess it makes for a good fantasy adaptation.

Despite all of these other books, Ender's Game is a classic.

I will chime in with I really really like the Ender series of books. Also Treason was a good book by Card as well. Also I agree about the Alvin Maker series started off great finished a little bit preachy.

    Beyond Freedom & Dignity - B.F. Skinner

Free will not actually existing according to relativity always interested me. This guy takes a less scientific approach but comes to the same conclusion. Oldie but a goodie.
