Japan has too many older and retired people. The problem is that there isn't enough births. At this rate, there will not be enough workers in the future to do all the business tasks. Japan would -really- suffer.
I'm very fertile and can fix this problem for the entire nation.

    You all fail miserably.

JAPAN DOES NOT WANT YOU. I don't care if you've already been there on vacation, and everyone loved you. If you move there, they will kill you brutally. They like tourists. They give money to the government, and only stay for a little while. They hate immigrants, because no matter what you do, YOU'RE STILL WHITE. The Japanese are some of the most racist people on the planet. They tolerate black people because they're absolutely fascinated by the fact that they're not sitting in a dark corner of Africa hunting lions with pointy sticks.

Just because you watch anime does NOT mean you're integrating yourself into Japanese culture. It means you're a creepy little nerd that watches adult cartoons. Only a portion of the population even watches anime. Most of them watch everything else on Japanese TV, stuff you don't get because you're not Japanese.

Stop dreaming, you're better off ANYWHERE else in the world, except the middle east.

Um, when did anyone in this thread say they wanted to move to Japan? I never claimed to be anything other than another weeaboo, and I have no problem with being treated as a stupid worthless foreigner if I ever decide to spend any time there at all. I mean, in America we even treat the tourists that way. The big difference is, we can't tell who's a foreigner until they speak.

They don't hate white people.. they hate outsiders which you would be even if you knew japanese.

Japanese is the most pointless language in the world to learn. You would be better off learning chinese if you wanted to play with cool characters.

Taking Spanish over Japanese or French was the smartest thing I've ever done in HS (living in California, you could only imagine lol.)

Japanese vs gaijin is just like any other issue, it's not simply love vs hatred. People who are angry/jealous will over-exaggerate it as pure racism towards the outside world and Japanophlies will underestimate the difficulty in fitting in.

The fact is that Japanese people grow up their entire lives surrounded by other Japanese people. An outsider is going to give them some level of discomfort and from that discomfort they can explore and understand or simply curl up and be afraid and angry. Works the same way in any country, but the difference is that the Japanese are so secluded within themselves to begin with that you notice it more.

You can fit in as a foreigner in Japan, but you will never truly be "one of them". You can be one of the team at work, one of the guys at the bar, and you can make many friends. However, you'll always be a foreinger in Japan, and not seen as a true Japanese citizen.

While I was in Japan, I knew Japanese but I could still run into problems. I've had bus doors shut in my face (although mostly my slow-ass fault). I remember calling a pizza places with some gaijin buddies and since I was a foreigner the guy was like "sorry we're closed", only to have our native Japanese friend call 5 minutes later and get "What would you like? smile wink"
The thing about black people is true as well. There was an African-American girl from NY that I hung out with and when we went around town, eyes would be drawn to her as if she were a giant magnet. The Japanese and very sheltered within their own country so you get all this weird and rude behavior.

On the other side, of course, there's a bunch of pleasent experiences that show that it's not an inherent trait of Japanese people to just hate everyone. I met a lot of friends just exploring the neighbourhood. There were many people that were friendly out of curiousity to be sure, but I've had complete strangers invite me into their homes and out with their families. There was an open air DVD shop I'd pass on the way to campus where the owner would chat it up with me. Eventually, he took me bowling and out for dinner with his family. He gave me some traditional baked goods and I gave him fucking Apple Newtons (American delicacy!) I received in a CARE package from home.

So it's not all "omg big American man" and it's not all horror stories either. If you are interested in Japan then I would highly recommend you take advantage of a study abroad program or something. It's fun as hell. I've been there several times as a student and as a worker and the positives way way beat the negatives.

Here's where I'll agree with Mifaco though: Don't go based on anime. Anime is fine and good as a gateway into the language, culture, etc... but Japan is not anime heaven. If you constantly talk about the latest episode of One Piece, they most likely haven't watched it. If you bring friends over to a room with Sailor Moon and Magic Knight Rayearth posters, they will leave. Manga and game centers are everywhere, so indulge in your hobbies, but don't be a walking anime cliche. People don't say "ne" or "nya" on the ends of their sentences. You will fail and fail hard.

    Cliffs notes:
    Japanese sheltered
    • some curious/friendly, some nervous/angry[/*:m:5a2a2]

Can find friends, can't intergrate into society
    Sad racist experience
    Happy togetherness experience
In conslusion, issue not black and white
Anime otaku make everyone, including Japanese, puke

That's so full of truthiness. No one needs to pay any attention to anything else in this thread to get the full picture.

Wait, are you trying to tell me that Japan isn't full of giant robots and school girls who transform into superheroes by using costume jewelry? Man, now I'm never going over there...

So if Japan isn't full of school girls and giant robots..

Rather than go to "Japan".. lets bring "Japan" here and pass some fucking laws and now that force all girls to wear school girl outfits and stop the war in iraq and build big giant robots with the money instead.
