I'm not going to make fun of anyone for playing the game a lot. I do it.
However, that being said...I WILL make fun of someone for playing the game a lot, and then thinking because they do that qualifies them to be in some kind of hardcore gangsta game badass club. If you actually think that way holy fuck for your own good, quit the game. Now. Get out and try to reform some kind of connection with reality because you have entirely lost touch.
Note the difference now: This is not me calling you a loser for playing too much and having fancy items. This is me calling you a loser because you think playing too much and having fancy items makes you a badass. It doesn't. It makes you more of a dork than the rest of us dorks playing this dorky fucking game.
bad·ass Slang: Vulgar.
–adjective Also, badassed.
1. (of a person) difficult to deal with; mean-tempered; touchy.
2. distinctively tough or powerful; so exceptional as to be intimidating.
–noun
Most ultra hardcore MMO players fall under both definitions of badass. It's pretty obvious that someone able to sacrifice their real-life to camp the highest end items/most contested claims will be in possession of the highest end/most contested items. If itemization is decent (which in FFXI it is) then those items will be, by definition, the most powerful items. By having more of them than you, he will be, again by definition, more badass than you.
Now that said, I think that most ultra-hardcore MMO players that come to these boards come in order to stroke their e-peen in front of the only other players on the planet that could understand why they are so proud of themselves. A normal person wouldn't know Tiamat from Tinkerbell after all. However in this case, I don't feel psnsonixx fell on that cliche enough to be called out on it.
Considering that at end game, the difference between the ultra-hardcore (the call tree people, the wake up at 5am on a Tuesday types) and the hardcore (the type that will sit through a 6 hour window in the evening of their own timezone) is razorthin. Then again, so is the difference between Hauby and Hauby+1, we're talking 1% differences here. Yet people pay 500,000 for a Hauby, and 2,000,000 for a Hauby+1, a difference of 300%, for a 1% difference.*
How can you argue that the economy, which is an accepted fact of life in FFXI, is any different from the difference between the ultra-hardcore and hardcore? This guy, through effort and coordination with other highly dedicated players, gets more than you, or other hardcore players. No reason to call him a douche when he's simply stating that truth for everyone to see.
My 2c.
