Reading CNN instead of working (as per usual), I came across this link. It's a list of acronyms and other misc shorthand phrases that are used over the internet in chat rooms, and are supposedly common-knowledge amongst many people.
...Only... I haven't heard of almost any of these...
BTHOOM = Beats the heck out of me?
GIWIST = Gee I wish I said that?
HHO1/2k = Ha ha only half kidding?
IYKWIMAITYD = If you know what I mean and I think you do?
They also left out some key internet-speak, such as:
WTF
GTFO
BBQKITTENS
ROFLCOPTER
Now this list is hosted on a site called missingkids.org. If this is what passes as a reference to help try and keep kids safe over the internet, may I be the first one to say that the next generation is fucked on this front. What parents really need is something more comprehensive, kinda like what UrbanDictionary does for each of these entries, if they wanna keep their kids safe over the interwebs.
