It was a complete bastardization after the first half of the movie. Up until the point Rose meets Dahlia, it was good, but after that.. any semblance to the original game was through the Gans' direction. Roger Avery remorselessly destroyed the plot because he didn't want to play the games.
Pretty much sums up my feelings on the movie. It was really good for the first, say, 20 minutes or so. The scene where Silent Hill first turns "dark", when Sharon's mother (I forget her name) goes down the corridors to look for her daughter and is attacked is very much of the first game. As soon as guys with canaries pop up, it's all lost.
The first Silent Hill is a great game in terms of WTF and story. The hospital and the school will leave you with an uneasy feeling for days. I remember playing through SH1 with a friend all night and you literally feel relieved when the switch comes from "dark" Silent Hill to "normal" Silent Hill. You see things in the game and think "dear god, what's that..." and in some cases, when you find out, you almost feel as if didn't want to know. There's also the great use of the radio. When something bad is coming, it will start making noise, so you're always waiting for what's coming next. It's quite the mindfuck.
Silent Hill 2 is good as well. It's not a direct sequel so to speak, but (as someone else said) more of a subplot. It retains a lot of the first one, in some respects. The story is pretty good too especially when you find out why the main character is in SH. Also, the visuals are pretty amazing. The hotel, for example. At one point you enter it and it's a normal looking hotel. Next the camera angle will switch and there's a blocked off room which looks completely destroyed by fire.
SH2 wasn't quite as good, imo, although some people like it better. The graphics are definitely more up to standard. There were some aspects which ruined it for me though. Like the hospital felt as if it was something of a rehash because it was just so creepy in the first game. Without trying to spoil too much, I can see how it tied in to the first one with the plot and the fact the main character had been there, but in the second I can't understand why the main character would have been to a hospital in the town.
SH3 and SH4 were awful to me. I couldn't even finish playing SH4. I don't know if it's just because I absolutely adored the first one when it came out. But 3 and 4 didn't live up to standard with me.
Don't judge the games by the movie. Although story elements are the same, you don't get the sense of apprehension in the movie that you get actually playing the game. The story of the games are better too.
