Well, for anyone who has been wondering why the 360 Elite has no HD-DVD built in, this just in:

According to Xbox's UK boss Neil Thompson, Xbox does not deny the possibility that it might support Blu-ray in the near future if its market share continues to hold up.

Hope nobody's spent that 200 bucks on the HD-DVD extension yet.

Gears doesn't play in 1080p... I doubt 360 ever will play in 1080p, but i'll be as excited as the next guy if they ever do.

As for GS/EB, i'm sure they will do something, but you will still have to fork over a good 2-300 bucks or so to buy the new one.

It might just be cheaper to buy the new HDD and controller if you really need them, at least until HDMI will actually be needed, at which point it won't cost so much.

Just my 2 cents, I think it makes a lot of sense.


Oh and PS3 will eventually play in 1080p, probably FF13/MGS4 if not before (Heavenly Sword.)

yea, and if EB/GS has a promo it'll be something along the lines of an extra $50 tradein credit when you trade towards a new one, which is currently something like $190 for a 360 with wireless controller+$35 for 20gig hdd and then $50 or w/e bonus tradein they give, you'd still be paying $200+

Gamespot/EB Games are really shady

I know there a business and it all about the mighty dollar, but the trade-in credit for games is really pathetic.

FFXII: 20.00
Bully: 20.00
Godhand: 10.00
(10% more trade in credit if you are a member, +20% more if you trade in games to buy a new game [sometimes])

Regular Video Game Store (Mom/Pop"esque")

FFXII: 30.00
Bully: 25.00
Godhand: 15.00
(Store-Credit +10 dollars more, Cash -5 dollars less)

Also alot of GS/EB employees push there favorite console/format to the consumer.
Rather than being netueral and telling it how it is, they always try very hard to change peoples mind about stuff.

I went to GS a couple of days ago, to get GoWII, I got my game and was about to leave, someone asked the question, can the PS3 be played on a SDTV (standard 4:3 TV)? or do you need a HDTV?

The GS employee said PS3 requires (WTF ) you to have a HDTV and the 360 can be played on all TV's, the games look like they are in high-definition even on a SDTV by using the 360.

I being a PS3 owner said my say in the conversation, and said PS3 can be played on almost all TV's, PS3 will look better on HDTV than a SDTV, but it is not required, same goes for the 360/Wii. Better cables + better TV = better resolution.

The guy said cool, and bought a PS3 lol.

im a gamestop employee and i dont hate ps3, just doesnt have any good games yet. ill sell whatever fits best for the person buying it though. and the reason on trades is thats where the company makes all its money, lower tradein = higher profit margin.

I wouldnt say fanboy, just someone who doesnt believe in all the hype the PS3 is/was given. When the system is worth buying, i'll be a believer too, i promise.

I work at gamestop. 90% of the time when someone comes to buy a next-gen system, they always ask you the golden question..

Which system is the best?

The employees answer will always match whichever games they like the best. (obviously) Since theres like 1-2 games out for PS3, you rarely hear anyone say that. Sure it has potential, but it makes no sense to buy a new system now just because there will be some 2 games out in 08.

Both of the other consoles have system selling games already. So when someone asks whats the best game out right now, 9 times out of 10 the answer wont be a game for PS3.

<-EB Employee. Ya sometimes I question the trade in values, but then again the promotions that are offered can stack into some nice chunks of change. The next generation titles always get the best values. E.G. +10$ for every 2 next generation titles traded in. Stacking with 10% card bonuses, etc. As for those games you listed their. FFXII, people are beating and getting rid of. They are starting to stack up in my particular store. Bully and Godhand didn't take off as expected, they rarely sell here.

Im neutral when it comes to system sells, always have been. If I can get the guy to walk out with a system in his hands, Im happy. If they come in interested in buying a PS3, I dont question it. But if they want the facts or my honest opinion I tell them straight up how I feel about it. With the PS3 though, it just doesn't have anything that simply sells the $600 price tag. You have to be honest with yourself. RIGHT now it just doesn't. I cant straight faced tell a customer, you HAVE to get it NOW because you need Motostorm! There simply isnt anything you are missing out on atm for the PS3. I do remind them of the potential for the system and that it will have some titles that will make it worth buying later down the road. E.G. MGS, FFXIII, GT5. But with a late 2007/2008 release time frame, I would sit and wait before downing 660$ on new system. Its potential IS a selling point, and it works. Ive sold a PS3 on it "potential" They guy was happy with hearing that and promptly bought a PS3, extra controller and Madden...

You also shouldn't question employee biases if they are at least rational about their arguments. If they are honest and are not fanboys they have every right to hold an opinion over another and not be particularly neutral. Ive always thought of that as a good thing in salesmen. Id rather have one that has an opinion, is honest, and isnt a robot programed to be neutral, with the inability to sway my decision if I walk in not sure of what to do. Being a salesman that plays "neutral no matter what" doesnt help with a buyers decision making IMO. Ive also found that customers really appreciate it when an employee has honest opinions. They come back because of it.

If they ask for personal preference I tell them I have all but the ps3 atm, and Im happy with what I have. With the push for non-exclusive titles I usually don't miss out on anything important. Later down the road, when PS3 has the titles I expect from Sony, Ill buy a PS3. Im a gamer, and tend to buy all the systems to simply avoid the wars and have the best of all worlds. I dont want one to win over the other because competition drives the quality. Even that said, If I had to pick just one out of the three, Id pick my 360. (Insert everything I love about the 360/Live here)

yea, i basically just ask them if they have a last gen console first, as they are more likely to stay in line with what they have for backwards compatability. then its mostly what kind of games they are looking for, if they have to play the exclusives, well then its pretty obvious which way for them to go.

microsoft has said they arent locking into hd-dvd is why its not built in. if bluray takes off they arent ruling out the possibility of an addon bluray drive.

yes/no, like the cd its open format, even tho it was developed by sony other people can use it, it's why the cd didnt fail, and they trying to make sure bluray doesnt fail either.

it wont play games in the 360, they arent going to make hd-dvd or bluray games, they would only add a bluray player. they've already said that only the internal drive is going to be for games.

Okay so either way the 360 won't play games via a next-gen disc.

Not that it matters, because we saw what MS can do with a regular DVD (hi2u gears of war...) But it just makes my decision that much easier, because there's no need for an HDMI port on the 360 unless you have too many cables that go into component and not enough inputs. (like myself, but I don't think that a simple cable switch is worth 200+ bucks.. just like I won't buy the 360 wireless wifi card. Removing a cable from running across the wall into the 360 isn't worth 100 bucks, sorry MS.)
