    Chigoe

I remember when ToAU was released I skilled my shield from like 100-160 very quickly on Chigoe.

I tried to go back and skill up Parry a few days ago, and after like 30 minutes, 50 parries (+20 parrying skill on my RDM) I didn't get a single skill up. It leads me to think that its not possible to skill up parry (or shield?) on Chigoe anymore. True or false?

False, you can still do it, just possible your skill has raised to a point where the level of the chigoe is not high enough to induce skill ups.

You could probably be at cap. I don't think they are anything over DC for most of them...

An alternative mob at that level, would be the black mandies in Den of Rancor. Just go to the north entrance from Yhoatar Jungle into the Den and go to the area right before the zone line. Pull 1 and go to town
I'd suggested to use Taco or some Def food + Blu sub :3

My parrying is 113. Since I play RDM and BST its one of the skills I haven't been able to really work on.

You can level parrying pretty easily on Chigoe.

    1) Break your Warlock's Gloves out of storage.
    2) Level BLU until you get Cocoon. You'll be using it as a subjob.
    3) Go to Caedarva Mire outside Nashmau, gather as many chigoes as you think you can handle (start out with 2).
    4) Get them all grouped together, take out your Earth/Terra's Staff and engage.

Of course, use the basic Haste, Stoneskin, Protect, Refresh, Phalanx (and Aquaveil if you're not feeling lucky).

Two reasons why BLU sub is good:
    1) Cocoon extends how much damage your Stoneskin can absorb. Not by a whole lot, but it helps. You'll likely only be able to keep it up while Stoneskin is up, so make it a point to recast Cocoon immediately after you put Stoneskin back up.
    2) BLU sub has no staff skill, and neither does an RDM main. Using Earth Staff in this way serves a dual-purpose, it'll reduce the damage you take, extending your Stoneskin, and with 0 staff skill, you'll mostly whiff on the chigoes all day long. This keeps them alive and it keeps them leveling your parrying. If you do manage to land a rare critical attack, one will die, just wait 5 mins for the respawn.

Also, for a few spare moments of amusement before you're done, cast Blaze Spikes.

Thanks for the protips Jeryhn, but its not like I've never done this before. I was just asking if it was possible or not to still gain Parrying skill up from Chigoe because it does seem strange that with Parrying 113 and around 50 parries (I was using Duel Rapier for +10 Parry, so not Earth Staff) that I didn't get a single skill up against a monster that capped out my shield at around 160.

There's always the chance that you got really unlucky with skill ups.

Let's ask Alleya about Guard skill ups.

Well, Parrying is a really hard skill to raise. You can parry umpteen million times and only get like 0.4. That's pretty much normal, I can't even imagine trying to level Guard.

It also depends on the Chigoe's level. Most Chigoes are EP, so the highest Shield on RDM will get is about 171 and the highest Parrying will get is around 180ish.

You could also try spawning DC Chigoes from things outside Al Zahbi like Marids. If you can get someone to help you, have them bap on a Marid until it spawns a chigoe or two, make sure you tag them both, then have him zone or log out or something.

Goes along the same way people use Steelshells/Pucks to level combat skills... they almost always rate EM or higher (hitting or getting hit by an EM mob to your level is the only way to reach the cap on a skill).

Yeah, I was thinking about doing Boyahda Mandragoras for a while but I'll try Chigoe again. It is possible I was just unlucky. Thanks.

If you target something out of range you don't have to worry about the rare crit. This will allow you to keep your weapon out, parry and be even moer lazy.

Preferably something that doesn't have a large roaming radius.

There's three chigoe's I've been leveling guard on in mire, between Mature Treants, and one Caedarva Leech that wanders in the area. It's been good to me so far, but the problem comes in that the leech likes to move about a large way, so I have to continually adjust myself to remain in attackon range. And just when I think I have a good position, hop Hop HOP it wanders right into my attack radius and suddenly I have three chigoes -and- a leech beating on me because I whacked it.

I've taken to having a RDM friend help me out by sleeping the leech in a good spot, while partied with her. She keeps the leech in position, and I get Phalanx II. With Defender and Phalanx2 up, the chigoes mostly hit for 0 with the odd crit.

I tried once targetting a mob behind me and keeping the chigoe's ahead, but for some reason in that position guard procs never happened, over 30 minutes worth of time. Turn back around to face the targetted mob, reposition the chigoes, and guard procs start happening again. Has anyone else ever noticed this, or was it just bad luck?
