ffxi controller

Does anyone know how to make an xbox360 controller work with FFXI on the PC? I tried the gamepad settings in ffxi config but it doesn't seem pick up the controller(I know the controller is functioning). Am I doing something wrong? Do I need a third party program that will make it work? Or am I just placing too much faith in SE that ffxi being on the xbox360 would mean the controller would work on PC?

I've never actually tried to use a controller with ffxi but I figured since I had the controller anyways I'd give it a shot <_<

although for running around and whatnot it should work, its just the standard usb 360 controller?

Its the standard usb controller, but it requires a special driver disc to run properly. I just bought a controller with the PC drivers (I don't have an xbox ) included in them, but i'm sure you can find a torrent or somesuch of the drivers you need.

and I only use the controller for running around/crafting/etc, not for actual party play. Unless I'm really lazy on war.

You can get the drivers straight from MS http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/gaming/download.mspx

There are also these modified drivers http://www.matt-land.com/xbcd/ which some people seem to prefer. I don't know, as of yet I've been too cheap to buy myself a 360 controller...and too lazy to set up Mame/Mugen on my HTPC...

what the fuck? I've used a controller the whole time I played FFXI and can't see how you'd make a wipe happen over a keyboard. Hell I've seen more people type /h or mistake something for CFH than I've seen anything go wrong with a controller.

Worst that's happened to me is if my USB port fucks up and the computer thinks my controller is unplugged (which is happening to me now, I just need a new smartjoy adaptor).

Unless your controller is going bad (i've had a few do it) then controller > Keyboard by a long shot.
And Lordwafik, that sounds alot like what my last controller was doing. It was something with the controller, like the wiring was going bad or coming undone inside the controller. It had started to get so bad that it would start to freak out the other usb plugged in stuff like my mouse and Ipod connector, and if it kept shorting out would eventually reset my computer.
Soon as I would unplug the controller it would stop doing it. Just replaced that controller with my new one and haven't had an issue since.
I'd try replacing it to see if it goes away, or at the least switching where the controller is plugged in at a different usb port. If it is still having the same issue than it is your controller, and not the actual USB port

I think the problem is actually (bolded):

PC === Smartjoy USB adaptor === Controller.

No way of testing the controller as there's no PS2 in this house, and the controller works fine, but the device itself will sometimes do the whole "plugin plugout plugin plugout" dance with the PC. I plugged a flash drive in there, it worked fine, it's definitely the adaptor (which hopefully I replace today)

I actually had the same problem with a Logitech USB controller--the one I originally bought when I got the game way back when. The wiring got a little loose and caued the thing to disconnect and reconnect over and over again, and sometimes causing my computer to reboot. Seeing as how the controller lasted me 3+ years, I was more than happy to replace it with the same model.

THIS is the gamepad I'm talking about. It's pretty much exactly like a PS2 controller, only with a USB interface and some software (that you don't have to install if you don't want to). I say you give this one a shot and see how it goes. FFXI + PS2-style gamepad = awesome.

Microsoft drivers are bad, they will not recognize the triggers as buttons, and instead Z axis's. You need 3rd party drivers like XCD, its a little weird to setup but it lets you set everything on your controller to something else. It's a great driver however i cant get it to work on vista so i'm back to sing a logitech ps2-ish usb controller.

Controllers are great, i switch between them and keyboard all the time, but 90% of play has been on controller since i've gotten it, it's way better and you can tell the game was designed for it.

That's the controller I've been using for a long while Res, I enjoy it, and has given me no problems other than the wiring. However, 2 year warranty ftw and i was able to replace it for the same one at no cost. Yay for that.
I heard that controllers were having issues with vista and the recognition of hte movement and camera angle triggers. Sucks for those that upgraded, not beign able to use controllers fully isn't fun =\

I actually use a straight up PS2 controller for my PC. I had a mock up logitech pad but it shorted out after awhile because my computers USB slots are full of suck

They got a bunch of adapters around you can get i got mine for like $12 at radioshack and i haven't had a problem with it yet

I had the PS2 controller usb adapter but it continued to constantly crap out on me. Went to a basic logitech USB controller, worked perfectly...until that crapped out too. now I am using what would appear ot be a shitty no name wireless usb controller that I dont even know who makes it, but I love it :D

Began the game on PS2, moved to PC with controller, I'll be damned if I can play as well on just the keyboard as I can now >_>;

I recently put a guide together to use a Wii mote with FFXI. Not really something that needs to be done.. but pretty cool if you got a Wii mote and want a controller for your computer
