I despise the Logitech controllers. The drivers WILL make you go insane.

That, and they last maybe 3 months... if that.

Sorry for the necro bump, but this is on topic with my question.

I recently got the PC version (I've played on PS2 since release) and I despise the keyboard only controls so I was looking into getting a controller for my PC (2nd account to dual box with).

Would it be better to get a PC controller, or a PS2 to PC adapter for a 2nd PS2 controller?

I tried that link to see what it looked like, but it says the item is no longer there/unavailable.

Note: Xbox style controllers are not an option.

Thanks in advance and sorry again for the necro.

Edit: Here's what i've found so far from browsing:

Logitech Dual Action Gamepad - Basic PS2 style controller.

    SmartJoy PLUS (PS/PS2 Adapter)

They got a bunch of adapters around you can get i got mine for like $12 at radioshack and i haven't had a problem with it yet
That's the way to roll. I got my hands on a PS2 --> PC controller adapter for like 5.99 off eBay. Thought I'd give it a shot;figured if it sucked i was only out 5.99. Plugged it in, plugged the PS2 controller in, no drivers needed. Setup the buttons in windows and it works like a champ.

Yeah, that's pretty much the current version of the controller I use, and they also make one with force feedback, if that's your thing. They come with a whole suite of software that does lots of stuff that I've never installed, so it really is just plug in, map buttons and go.

I ended up getting that controller, but now I have a (really) stupid question:

How do I set it up to work? I'm completely ignorant when it comes to alot of computer stuff, so I could just be missing something right in front of me.

I did the "Profiler" thing where you assign commands to buttons, but I guess the question is how do I apply it to FFXI?

Ya gotta run the FFXI Config applet in your start menu. Right on the very first tab there's a "Gamepad Settings" button. Click that and click the checkboxs in the upper right-hand corner that says "Enable Gamepad," "Enable slider," and "Enable hat switches." This area is where you map all the buttons. Once you think you've gotten it set, click each of the buttons for "Movement," "Camera," and "Menus" and make sure they're all calibrated. Test it out by clicking the "Test Gamepad" button in the bottom right-hand corner to make sure everything's gravy. Hit "OK" twice and you should be good to go.

There's another gamepad config in the PlayOnline Viewer Config applet, but that's only if you want gamepad control in PlayOnline.

Controllers are great, i switch between them and keyboard all the time, but 90% of play has been on controller since i've gotten it, it's way better and you can tell the game was designed for it.
Any idea if they made drivers for the wireless 360 controllers yet?

Otherwise, I'll just continue sending SE e-mails regarding adding in xinput.dll (the DLL for all 360-related peripherals) support for the PC version, as they already have that implemented for the 360 release of the game.
(and Microsoft made xinput.dll easy as hell to wrap also, got this controller running in a freakin' BASIC language)
