Well you need to up your proteins first and foremost.
Eating 6 times a day of high protien / low fat foods is the best way of doing things. Thing is, your body can only digest 30g of protien before it shits itself out.

A healthy balance of 30 minutes of cardio 3~4 times a week is suffice for HEALTHY weight loss. If you're crash dieting you're going to gain all of it back the minute you stop doing whatever crash you were on.

What I was always told while in the USMC (where height / weight standards are strictly enforced) was carbs in the AM / Protiens in the PM.

Granola bar to start the day, its quick, its easy and you can eat it on the go. Since our days started at 6 am, I'd eat that on the way to work. 10ish, I'd have an apple, bannana and usually some yogurt. Lunch time would usually be tuna fish, turkey something like that. What I found out is that Subway -> Turkey on Wheat + mustard and vegatbles = somewhat decent, not that expensive and condusive to HEALTHY weight loss.

After lunch depending on what I was working out that day, probably carrot sticks or some other type of vegtables. Again, quick, easy healthy.

Dinner would be chicken, only bad thing, I got to a point where I hated chicken and started using other protiens to get around it. A snack before bed, light at least 2 hours before bed, you need to have time to digest it before sleeping.

Cardio / Cardio / Cardio !!!!!! I can't tell you how important it is to get your heart rate up and its kind of simple. Taking stairs instead of elevator, walking instead of driving simple little things can change your life for the better. If you're not trying to actually work out and stuff doing little things daily can make a world of difference. I can't say how horrible crash diets are, and by you limiting yourself calorie wise is doing nothing but putting yourself into a starvation mode. itll do nothing but hurt you 10x more in the long run.

Are you taking any kind of vitamins or anything while you're doing this 1k calorie intake? I wrestled for 14 years and I can tell you, the only thing you'll get by taking that diet without suppliments is sick. My senior year in high school I got a trainer to help me cut the weight I needed to cut safely(189 to 171) and he put me on a 1200 calorie diet, but I also had to take a 8oz glass of whey protein, a multivitamin, an anti-oxident, and a flax oil pill for all the things my body wasn't getting while eating.

Your body will eventually become used to the diet in time(took me about 1 month to become adjusted), but like I said, you have to replenish what your body needs somehow if you don't, you're doing more harm to your body then good.

I'd recommend reading "The Okinawa Program."

This book was written by 3 doctors who researched Okinawan centenarians, who live longer than anybody else in the world.

Here's a link to the Okinawan food pyramid in .pdf format. http://okinawaprogram.com/pdf/okinawa_d ... yramid.pdf

Cutting out Coca-Cola and replacing it with plenty of water was a good first move.

I'd recommend a moderate exercise program, even if just stretching every day and walking a mile or two at least 1-2 times a week. Raising your baseline metabolism by increasing your muscle mass will help you lose weight by burning more calories while you rest.

As far as diet goes, eat until you're only 80% full. Stick with lots of vegetables and other complex carbohydrates, including plenty of whole grains.

By the way, most Okinawans only eat 1200-1500 calories a day, but they eat more food by volume than Americans do.

1200-1500 calories is plenty if you're not very active, as long as you're getting those calories from nutritious foods like vegetables, whole grains, and not junk food.

I don't diet at all, but I don't eat fast food and a bunch of nasty stuff, either. I take a multivitamin in the morning (I'm not much of a breakfast fan but I'll eat a yogurt or granola bar in the morning), and I run 2 miles every other day at the gym. At first I thought implementing an exercise program into my routine was going to be lame, but I love it and look forward to it now. It only takes about 20 minutes to run 2 miles (for me) and that small amount of time keeps me in shape.
I'd suggest that when you lift weights 3 times a week, just do a quick jog on the treadmill to get your heart rate up before you lift. That's where you will burn the fat. It's amazing how fast your endurance will rise, too. Good luck!

since playing FFXI I gained a bit of weight. Since then ive lost most of it by doing things such as sit ups, push ups, jumping jacks, and jogging in the morning. 15 minutes of Jogging each morning then showering and going to school/work really helps. You pay much more attention and you dont feel as lazy as you would if you had a weight problem.

Do a minimum of 15 minutes of exercise that will make you sweat and thats enough. Also if your drinking Soda try switching to the Diet brand or better yet water. I used to drink Coke alot but now im hooked on Volvic and Perrier. I know they are expensive but I'd rather spend $2 more a day than being overweight.

1000 Calories a day is terrible for you. You will feel exhausted at work. Feel hungry almost all the time. and finally probly give in to the urge to eat bad foods much easier. A calorie is only a measure of energy content in food, not necessarily how bad it is for you. An apple may have 250 calories in it completly, but the lack of Sugars and fats make it a much better option than a large french friends at Mcdonalds.

I recently lost some weight so I'll tell my story.

In high school I played baseball and took weight training so I could eat whatever I wanted. I decided not to play college baseball so all my exercise went out the door. For some reason it never occurred to me that I could not eat fast food anymore and drink as much soda as I was drinking and I gained weight.

Not to long ago I started getting this constant cough (I don't smoke) so I went to the doctor. They told me I was drinking way to much soda and my stomach could not hold down all the acid so I had to stop drinking soda. I was probably drinking 2-4 20 oz Mountain Dew's a day. So, to ween myself off soda I started drinking Diet Coke. In that first week I shit you not I lost six pounds just by not taking in all the calories from Mountain Dew. Eventually I started drinking nothing but water.

Once I started losing weight from drinking soda I decided I might as well go all out. I quit "drinking my calories" and completely stopped eating fast food. Now I eat nothing but salads and subway during the week. On the weekend I let myself eat whatever the fuck I want. On Friday nights I usually eat an entire Dijorno (sp?) pizza. Saturdays and Sundays I eat just as bad. Oh, and I drink a shit-ton to. During the week though I always eat healthy. Two slices of whole wheat toast in the morning, subway or salad for lunch, and the same for dinner. (Salads are actually pretty good, you can put whatever you want in them pretty much. Croutons, chicken, one carrot, half a cucumber, one green onion, and an entire of bag of non-iceberg lettuce for me.)

Now during the week I maintain about a 1000-1400 calorie diet. I did not get flabby and I did not lose energy, I gained it. I no longer fall asleep in class nor do I need naps. I can also still bench press about 225 pounds. I am 5'11 195 right now and still losing weight. Oh, did I mention I lost all this weight, 40 pounds, without one bit of excercise lol?

The key is to not drink your calories. Even drinking diet soda is bad for you. The ingredients make you retain water and body fat. Another important thing is to not take in to few calories, otherwise your body will think your starving yourself and store fat instead of burning it. Piging out on the weekends helps. I also never ate anything past 7 o'clock. Now I look just like I do on my FFXI players pic again.

Too god damn lazy to see if it was already mentioned, but if you don't take in enough calories in a day, your body goes into starvation mode, and 1000 would be cutting it awfully close. Basically, this means that your body will hold onto each and every fuckin' calorie, and is quite counter productive (I tried it during my first cut way back when, and found out the hard way ;\). If you want to be taking in less than 2000 calories a day, I really wouldn't go any lower than 1750.

Yeah QFT. Then once you're done "dieting" your body will continue to hold on to each and every calorie if and when you choose to go back to normal eating habits. I think this is part of the reason why people with eating disorders (anorexia; bulimia) end up obese after they are "cured"; their bodies are storing everything they can because they are used to being starved.

One method of losing weight that I think works really well starts with keeping a journal of what you eat for a week, and be honest about quantity and portion sizes.

I already hear a lot of people saying "duh." The other thing you need to note in your journal in addition to what you're eating is how you feel after you eat the food.

A lot of people don't really realize how much they are eating, and the journal helps that. It also helps when you look at it and see something like you always feel like you crash around 4pm. You could eat a lighter lunch and have a snack around 3 and you'll be crash-free most likely.

The other component is exercise. You'll need to do whatever is appropriate for your current body, example: if you're a whale, you probably want to swim since it's low-impact (kidding).

    Good ideas:
    1) Lift weights. It's a better idea to lift before you do other shit simply because you don't want to be tired from running/swimming/climbing/eating a biscuit from Popeye's/playing full-court basketball before you lift because you're more likely to injure yourself.
    2) Eat smaller meals and break them up throughout the day if possible. Don't just gorge yourself at one or two meals and have one light meal.
    3) If you can afford it, talk to a nutritionist. If you're overweight, you may want to get checked as well for diabetes.
    4) Develop a mantra that helps you stick to whatever it is you're planning to do, whether it is lose weight, gain weight, become more toned, etc. One example I know of is a guy that says "Tie your shoes" as his mantra because it reminds him that sometimes that first action is the most important in being active and healthy. He said you have to tie your shoes before you head out the door. I said, "What if you're doing yoga?"

People freak out about calories more than they should.

First off, as many people have pointed out, 1000 a day is just killing yourself. You need more than that. The word "calorie" has a negative connotation to it, but in essence you need them to survive. They are a source of energy for your body.

Second, people are constantly burning calories. Even in small amounts. You burn calories by breathing, picking up your backpack, or walking to class. Obviously if you want to burn a significant amount of calories, you have to do cardio excersises, but the point is that it adds up and calories don't just sit there forever.

But if you're really worried about calorie counts, ditch the croissants and stick to fruits and vegetables for snacks.

a very quick way to figure out about how many calories you should eat per day without gaining weight is to take your weight in kilograms and multiply it by about 24. If you eat less than that number, you will lose a small portion of that weight, and to continue losing weight you will need to add resistance excercise and slowly decrease the caloric intake.

for those who want to figure it out 1 kilogram is 2.2 pounds

and also 3500 calories is one pound, so by eating 500 less calories per day, you can lose 1 pound per week(you really shouldnt lose more than 2lbs per week)

I am at 135 pounds.. that rounds up to 61.235 kilograms.. and by your formula my daily metabolic need is around 1469.64 calories which seems pretty low compared to how much I eat

I heard that formula once... I heard another one that was:

    Men: BMR = 66 + (13.7 X wt in kg) + (5 X ht in cm) - (6.8 X age in years)
    Women: BMR = 655 + (9.6 X wt in kg) + (1.8 X ht in cm) - (4.7 X age in years)

    Note: 1 inch = 2.54 cm.

    1 kilogram = 2.2 lbs.</p>

    Activity Multiplier

Sedentary = BMR X 1.2 (little or no exercise, desk job)
    Lightly active = BMR X 1.375 (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/wk)
    Mod. active = BMR X 1.55 (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/wk)
    Very active = BMR X 1.725 (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days/wk)
Extr. active = BMR X 1.9 (hard daily exercise/sports physical job or 2X day training, i.e marathon, contest etc.)

So for me that would be 66 + 839.2072 + 850.9 - 176.8 = 1579.3072 and I am moderately active so x1.55 rounds to 2448 calories. That is about how much I eat in a day.

that formula is if you do absolutely no excercise. its what we calculate for Total parenteral nutrition patients daily needs. That is the lowest amount for your bodily functions to continue at a normal rate, basically just sitting and being alive for a day, uses 24 times your weight in kg.

It's very hard to do this if you're a fast eater. It takes about 10-15 minutes for the brain to receive the message from your stomach that it's full. If you can, try to eat slower, chew slower, whatever. Read something in between bites, or if someone is with you, instead of hunching down around your food, talk to them.

I'm doing the Body For Life program now where I eat six smaller meals a day and go to the gym 6 days a week (3 days lift, 3 days cardio alternated). I don't eat any portion bigger than the size of my fist. Like clockwork, I'm a little hungry at the 3 hour mark. Even if I'm not hungry, I at least try to snack a little bit to keep my metabolism going.

Going to the gym in the morning really jumpstarts your metabolism throughout the day as well. I've tried time and time again to go to the gym after I get out of work, but trust me, after work you're tired and not mentally there and you will most likely find yourself on the couch. That's why I go in the morning...and I go early enough that I can come home before work and cook a breakfast and take my time eating it. Don't rush things. It's also so comforting knowing that you got it out of the way so the rest of the day is yours.

I can't stress how important weight resistance training is to getting healthy and in shape. As previously mentioned, muscle obviously burns calories much more efficiently than fat...because I don't think fat burns any, hehe. Also consider that 5 pounds of shaped muscle looks ALOT more appealing than 5 pounds of unshaped fat.

Don't starve yourself, and don't overdrink on water. People are nuts over water and you're not really doing anything other than drowning yourself. A few glasses a day should be plenty. Don't buy into that 8-10 glasses bullshit unless you're very active throughout the day.

You should drink enough water that your urine is clear. If it's not, you need to drink more water.

Yes and no. Colored urine is usually a sign of dehydration but you can eat foods with vitamins (B12) that will color it that way even if you aren't dehydrated.

And if you're experienced enough to tell the difference between yellow and fluorescent yellow-green. I drink about 1 1/2 to 2 gallons of water a day, more as its getting warmer weather.

My main weakness is not getting enough healthy food during work since it requires going up and down wooded mountains all day so I usually slack and eat those silly Lunchables.

Worst diet was eating 3-4 MREs a day for a week. I estimated 7-9000 calories a day on that and I gained 4 pounds.
