Heh! I wish they had that up when I first started playing. For weeks I had no idea there was a second page to the main menu! I had no idea where to find stuff people said to change there.

It's late, but good for SE to have made a basic guide for people who never played MMOs before.

I like how in the Intro video to the beginners guide they show a Taru RDM fighting Behemoth solo, lol.

I always read the manual and guide thoroughly for any game before even starting it up, so I knew about menus and chat filters and font colors and macros and such.

But I was confused at first about whether the people talking to me in the opening CS were NPCs or players.

Heh! I was close to that. I thought every monster aggroed resting, so (leveling WHM) I zoned back into Sandy every time I needed to rest. So much wasted time! Hee!

Maybe, it's hard to tell without a Tiesto soundtrack.

The videos are done rather well for what it's worth. The taru getting owned and screaming in slow motion is entertainment at it's finest.

Except they purchased FRAPs so they didn't have to string together 200 30 second clips

I started game after reading every bit of information I could find. I'm that much of a know-it-all.

I got the hang of the menus and basic mechanics pretty fast, but I had no idea what the Auction House was till I was like level 15. So in order to make money to buy my low leveled armor I would farm things like bees, Quadav and gobs outside Bastok and then npc the drops and buy the armor from the NPC. Needless to say it took me quite a while to get a full set of Scale at level 10, and my weapons were suboptimal. ><

pretty cool idea, too bad SE fails at promoting the game in North America so the video is a bit late. lol. what we need is some drama, aimed at WoW, and it'll get people interseted in FFXI again.

I couldn't play the game for a month (got it day after release but computer couldn't take the heat) so I read the manual about..10-15 times. Also alot of gamefaqs stuff. (lolgamefaqs)

I knew what the AH was, but I thought you actually had to somehow get into it to use it. c.c I'd closely watch all the people standing around the windows and try to spot just how they were getting in to talk to the people/see the stuff for sale/etc.

FFXI was my first MMO, I lacked a whole lot of basic knowledge.

    lol... this is funny.

    • In Windy it says you have to give your Adv. Coupon to the Jack of Clubs, but the Taru in the video gives it to the Three of Clubs! >.>
      No mention of emotes.
"Signet also gives us an experience boost and helps us in defeating monsters." -- Really? I thought only Sanction did that.
Not pointing out the experience points won during the battle.
No mention on limited actions on KO.
No mention of selling items to another player through trade.
OMG! Mission spoilers! I was thinking of switching to Windy from San d'Oria.. but bleh.
"Your mission rank represents your social position in your country." -- That's FAME

They still have a long way to go to cover everything! And wtf, they're allowed to use 3rd party tools such as Fraps to take video during gameplay! Do SE employees not have to agree to the Terms of Service?

I'm sure everyone also noticed that it was all taken on Atomos, except for the small clips of people at Lower Jeuno and Whitegate Auction Houses. The Taru is a Red Mage.. that was able to Wide Scan.. and "get lost" in areas like Altepa Desert, Purgonorgo Isle, and Yuhtunga Jungle when he doesn't have Altepa Gate Crystal (or skills to dodge aggro along the way), gil for Manaclipper, or even keys for Kazham Airship Pass. Yay GM Tools!

I'm interested in pointing out further flaws in their upcoming videos.

Yeah, same with me. I was like "Auction House? Where's the doors?" I'd stand there looking for it, then I finally found the window and I'm like "Oh. That's a bit gay "

FFXI is my first and only MMO too.

A short while after I started, I saw someone with the "Star Onion Brigade Member" title. Based on the opening CS of the place where I started (Windurst), I thought that guy must be like some kind of lower GM or something.

I did actually read quite a bit online before starting the game (everything on GameFAQs, which was all I knew at the time; first MMORPG). Of course, it's hard for it to really sink in until you've been playing a bit. I was intimidated by the auction house for a couple weeks; I didn't think someone as new as me would need it yet. I sure did need to NPC quite a few crystals to buy new armor and weapons from the shops!
