I hate all this offending shit, muslims always seem to be offended by something. Political correctness is a fucking joke. In primary schools and nurseries in Scotland they aren't allowed to sing "bah bah black sheep..." it's now "bah bah wooly sheep..." it's just unreal.

    Grow some balls.

I'm Jewish by blood, so I like to know what is going on over there..

As it was said, Israel hardly has clean hands when it comes to affairs in there part of the world, but shit is going to get dirty when everyone around you believes your nation shouldn't exist.. Israel is full of Jews, and their religion tells them that land belongs to them, and all the people around are pretty hardcore Muslim, and their doctrine tells them the land is theirs.

Honestly the only way religiously backed battles like this end is in alot of blood, either the Muslims outnumber the Jews and wipe Israel off the planet, or Israel kills enough Muslims for them to give up and decide the land isn't worth it :/

Lets just say history in college is much more...accurate.

Point is, high school in general is a joke, and the history they teach is so subjective to both their location and religious affiliation that you may as well just sleep through it and take a class in college.

I actually thought of an interesting question. In high school, we covered slavery as an institution for roughly a couple days and spent the rest of the semester on the civil war and how the north were heros (like when studying WWII a lot of teachers emphasize our being heros rather than the atrocities of the Holocaust. Watching Schindler's List in class does not count.) My question is in the South, do they talk much about slavery in class? How do they present it?
I attended High School in both Hawaii and North Carolina. My US History class in Hawaii covered slavery and civil rights over a 6 week period, very into detail, very good stuff. Teacher was a former US History professor at UH in Manoa.

North Carolina....not even close. I moved here in the middle of my Junior year, and finished US History here. Slavery and Civil Rights was just coming up, and since I enjoyed it so much in Hawaii (because it was in depth, I like history), I didn't care that I had to sit through it again. We covered it in a week. The white teachers are so concerned with offending black people that it's cut out. Same goes for the Holocaust in WW2 in my AP World History Class, the white teachers here skimmed over it (as they put it, I'd say they damn near skipped it) because there's a decent sized Jewish community around here they didn't want to offend. I really do understand that people of color and religion don't want to hear about that stuff, since it gets passed down through generations of their families, but if you don't go over it, and especially understand the cause of it, how are you going to be able to prevent similiar incidents in the future? In short, the North Carolina public school system (History and science-wise) sucks.

Those who do not learn from history, are doomed to repeat it.

The Holocaust isn't OFFENSIVE to hear about to me. It's something really terrible that happened to Jewish people, but I don't get offended and cover my ears and yell at my teachers whenever I have to learn about it. It's a hard pill to swallow to learn what happened to them, but I think that everyone should know that it did happen.

I just think that any teacher that is skipping very important material in order to not offend kids shouldn't be a teacher, like someone in this thread already stated. They're not doing their job correctly imo, and it's not fair to the reasonable kids that wouldn't be offended by learning about history.

It's shit like this that actually makes me want to be an educator, so that I can teach things how I want to and not get caught up in silly shit.

It's one thing to skim over the Holocaust and Slavery and Native Americans, it's COMPLETELY another to skip them entirely. If a Muslim killed a teacher or a professor over something like this, that would cause a hell of a lot of controversy...not just in the UK but I'd imagine worldwide. It's a sore subject.

London is FULL of muslims from what I remember. The hotel I stayed at was across the street from the underground bombing, and that one street was full of Muslims and hookah bars. >_>

Also, the North is seen as the victor, no doubt about it, but they've never been put into our heads as heroes. Especially when you look at the fact that the war didn't start because of slavery, but because of economic issues, and also, near the end of the war, Sherman's march ripped up tons of land, and burned and killed livestock, and stealing food from farmhouses.
The end of slavery would have destroyed the southern economy...
We are taught in Alabama schools that the Civil War was singularly fought over the slavery issue. While this is a steaming load of crap, it is the PC thing to do. As for Eaglestrike's statement above: Yes, but: The Northern states were more populous than the mostly rural south, which meant the House of Representatives was continuously in their favor. The North maintained the economic chokehold on the South by taxing the shit out of anything that was shipped out of Mobile or through rail. Birmingham was a Soviet ICBM target for the duration of the Cold War. Do you know why? Because of the steel industry. Jefferson County is one of very few places in the world where all three materials needed for the steel making process can be found in short proximity(Iron, Limestone and coal). The South could make steel cheaper and more efficiently than any mill in the North, so cue the legislations to protect Northern steel interests. Now tell me again why the economy down here hung dependant upon cotton farming?

Not trying to be a defensive asshole, just pointing out things that tend to get overlooked.

    Happy Passover, by the way.

edit: You know. This whole article is really fucking stupid. They're afraid of anti-Semitic behavior? Fuck that. It's HISTORY. No matter if you don't fucking talk about it still happened. It's always going to have happened, because it is history. Dropping crucial parts of a history class because you're afraid a fucking Muslim is going to QQ at it at you is retarded on everyone's part. Ugh, this really just 'grinds my gears' as they say.

I can't pinpoint the reason, but the US keeps tearing away at its own balls, and calling it ‘‘becoming more politically correct’’. All this stuff has been taught in schools for so many years now, and all of sudden it becomes offensive? BS.

It's horrible that a country with such a poor educational system (K-12) is willing to omit this kind of information. Just makes it worse.

Well, we are one nation, under fear.

And people need to hear about the Holocaust, because it's the closest anyone in modern history came to wiping out any ethnic group of that size. I was married to a woman raised in a Jewish family. One of her friends in high school had a mom who was in the Hitler Youth.

You got some interesting stories from both sides of the fence as a result. If for nothing else, lessons about the Holocaust should be taught for the simple reason that obliterating someone because of their blood, or religion, or anything of the sort is the darkest, most evil form of malice in the world.

The irony is that thanks to the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts, millions of people are being having that idea of a "Final Solution" ground into their head one tank shelling or suicide bombing at a time...and the rest of the world is being taught to ignore it and the best historical example of what happens when we decide it's "right".

Of course, I'm of the opinion that it won't stop until someone stupid and fanatical enough gets their hands on a nuke and glasses over part of the Middle East. Tel Aviv, perhaps. At which point there's a good chance that the survivors can all watch over their promised lands while dying from the fallout of the resulting wave of nuclear explosions.

Though what you're saying is true (at least in some parts of the US), this article is describing things that are happening in the UK.

On a different note, I can't help but wonder where this kind of stuff ends. I have trouble comprehending how a public school system (at least one in the US), whose curriculum is entirely dictated to it by higher levels of government (state board of education, etc), can do anything but say, "Hey, our curriculum says we teach that things happened this way. If you don't like it, GTFO." I may personally think that JFK wasn't assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, but I that doesn't give me any right to throw a fit at my teacher for saying that in a lesson. Fucking stupid.

It is just a matter of time, we are going to end up destroying ourselves regardless what we believe in.

Human nature will make that happen.
