I'm in high school in the south, and we do go over slavery, but mainly the big issues, and specific cases. My teacher didn't drive into us how horrible slavery was with graphic descriptions, but also didn't just completely ignore it.
Also, the North is seen as the victor, no doubt about it, but they've never been put into our heads as heroes. Especially when you look at the fact that the war didn't start because of slavery, but because of economic issues, and also, near the end of the war, Sherman's march ripped up tons of land, and burned and killed livestock, and stealing food from farmhouses.
