    Fraternities in College. . .

Well the main point of this is to see how many people actually joined a fraternity in college if it applies to you. I perosnally am in Phi Kappa Tau and I don't know how my college experience would be without it because its so bad ass. Also if anyone is in Phi Kappa Tau hit me up with a message because it would be cool to get to know people from another chapter. But yea just wondering what people think about em

Edit: I don't get involved with it because it's not my scene.. So if If it's what your into go for it.

Theres marketable and financial perks to rushing. 70% of fortune 500 CEO's rushed. It's not all about the friends, and frtas can be very appealing on resume's. With that said, i didn't rush...didn't want the life to hinder my education.

Isn't there a difference between rushing and pledging?

Not to sound totally ignorant or oblivious, but..

What would the advantage be having a Fraternity membership on your resume?

I would be one to think it would be the opposite, possibly detrimental.

If your fraternitiy is a national one and the person hiring you is in the same one (but possibly different chapter) it's a definite plus.

Well, you rush, then you pledge. Rushing happens at the beginning of school and is like shopping for a frat. I guess some people may not rush and may just jump into a frat that maybe their parents or friends have pledged.

Not really. A lot of fraternities are known for taking leadership roles on campus, and for participating in large amounts of community service. Just because movies and party schools portray them as a bunch of people drinking and participating in borderline-homosexual acts while pledging does not mean that is the norm.

However! Many many many many people join them for that exact reason, thus they often meet their stereotype.

There is a reason that stereotypes are in fact...stereotypes. They usually hold some water. That's not to say that some frat's, as someone mentioned, can be very beneficial aside from having friends to drink with.

Couple of my best friends are from a Frat, and it's entirely the stereotype Hollywood "glorifies" it as.

I was in a frat in my four years at undergrad, and now 2 years later I'm going back to get my MBA. Many of my fraternity friends in business and politics, and doing quite well for themselves. On the other hand, in my fraternity there was a fairly big pot-smoking crowd that did nothing. There were a few that did more hard core drugs. There were a couple lazy people who will do nothing in life. I feel like that's a pretty good cross section of the normal university, so I don't see a fraternity as being much different from the university on the whole. The real thing to note is, each of us was who we were before we pledged that fraternity. No one changed because of it. We just met some cool people (and a few that we didn't like), got to live near each other, and had fun a lot. The common misconception is that everyone in a fraternity is alike, and that frats mold you in the "frat" image. This is nowhere near the truth. I couldn't have imagined a more different group of people than my frat brothers. It really broadened my horizons to meet people from so many different backgrounds.

I'm sure a fair amount of frat-bashing posts will come out because of the stories of people binge drinking and dying or other serious stories such as rape, etc. These are awful things that happen in college, not just in fraternities, but you hear about them more often because this stuff makes the news cause, as we all known, the news is pretty damn negative. A majority of frats aren't like that because - if they were - they wouldn't be there anymore. Plus it's easy to hate something that you know nothing about, were never involved in, and can be easily stereotyped through past news stories or movies/TV generalizations. However, I enjoyed my frat and it helped me find a job. I'm no Animal House failure, and neither was the majority of my fraternity.

    To sum it up:
It's not for everyone, and it doesn't change or make you who you are. If you don't get in one, or don't do one, don't feel bad or hate on those who did do it.

EDIT: Oh yea, I was the guy in charge of community service at my fraternity, we helped build a Habitat House and participated in the March of Dimes. I helped coach a youth basketball team. At my school (a major Southern university), on average, students in fraternities do more hours of community service than non fraternity students.

alpha kappa psi during my undergrad. Not really your traditional frat, it's completely business oriented. But umm it's the shit if your idea of a banging party is snorting coke, playing monopoly with real money and chasing after asian bitches.
