Well, you can avoid Capes, and still get stuff like the 300 and Transmetropolitan.

If you want something that is a bit different than normal superhero stuff... I'd suggest the entire Planet Hulk arch of "The Incredible Hulk".

Full Metal Panic: Watch it if you never did, it's one of the best thing out there, especially 2nd season.

Full Metal alchemist: Must see

Bleach: If you like Naruto, you should watch that one (avoid filler episode between 61 and 115) . People who like one series normally like the other.

Death note: As previously mentioned, it's made of pure win. Watch the anime, then finish the story with the manga if you dont want to wait (they are currently on episode 24 out of 36 or something).

Excel Saga: It's pretty funny and random, worth watching


I watched Rozen Maiden 2 weeks ago (2x12episodes + 2ova). I thought it was pretty cool and well done (the soundtrack in this anime is probably my favorite). Elfen lied was decent too, if you can get over the excessive gore and naked people.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (decieving title, it really is good for a magic girl anime)

Shinigami no Ballad (weird, short but kinda heartwarming. nice music)
Code Geass (entertaining to watch, just to try to find some hidden meaning that isn't there though)
Azumanga Daioh (funny and pretty random)
Ichigo Mashimaru (same as above)
Manabi Straight (same as above)
Nodame Cantabile (if you like classical/orchestra music you might like this)
Haibane Renmei (awesome anime)
School Rumble (funny as hell, once you get into it. getting to know the characters is when the funny starts)
Kanon 2006 (great animation, story and characters)

/r/ um... Fox used to show an anime series sunday mornings, this dude could turn into a gundam style robot but the longer he was in that form the more it controlled him i think (its been years sorry) and there was another guy (his brother?) who was definitely evil and was always attacking him

If you're into the super robot type of shows, I found Mazinger Z was worth a few laughs (it's awfully cheesy, yet started almost ALL the cliches you see in super robot shows today)

Other than that, Rozen Maiden is definitely win.
