Thousands of dollars is nothing, and if you've made something like that in an MMO before, you can easily do it again. How do you think the JPs knew how to do it? Bragging about a voke bot, like Wafik said, is child's play compared to what people with real jobs do.

Dumb rich people will pay thousands for plenty of things, a shitty voke bot would probably be one of them. I mean, people buy video game characters for that price for god's sake.

Even with an amazing portfolio, you will not get a decent-paying job without a stupid little piece of paper from a school proving you paid the money, spent the time, and were devoted and hard-working enough to get it.

Then, on top of that, there's the catch-22 of having 'experience' in the field already.

I'm going to make the assumption you're not in college and/or you haven't tried getting a job that pays more than $8/hr

Congratulations on learning how to hook into an active process and read the memory out of it and all that jazz. Then again, it's pretty well documented on how to do that on PC, so congratulations on being literate and able to use google.

Stay in school, kiddo, because problems in real life are not nearly that simple, and a few thousand dollars is at best a few months' rent nowadays.

It is funny you make assumptions that I don't have a degree or a high paying job

I never even said that you didn't need a degree.. I just stated the education behind the degree is nothing you can't google because someone was worried if they were "ready" for a job. :/

All that pascal I learned in college sure helped me though

$3000 is pretty good for 2 hours worth of work though :/ I didn't take the money because I didn't need it.

It's pretty obvious you don't have a decent degree from anywhere good, considering what you're saying

Most universities have become greedy organizations who will hand out a degree to anyone willing to pay the money for it so their degrees are practically pointless to have.
Higher education is the only part of the US's education system that isn't totally fucked up. In fact, it's the reason that America still churns out alot more talent than our highschool test scores indicate. There's a reason that every other country sends their kids here for college.

To be specific, you said "if you know how to google search, you can handle any comp eng job", and that's plainly false.

Now you're backpedalling and saying "nothing you learn in college you can't google". Ok, that may be true for whatever shitty college you went to. But it's not my fault you went to a shitty college and got a shitty degree that failed to prepare you for non-shitty jobs that require non-shitty engineers.

devek, the essence of a good education (at least in computer science/engineering) is in learning how to approach different kinds of problems (i.e., design patterns), how to discern between information in various problems that is and isn't relevant (i.e., abstraction), and which tools to use in solving these problems. a lot of this can be self-taught with the right resources, but that doesn't lend itself very well to a quick one-liner on a resume like "B.S. in C.S. from University of So-and-So" does, and those one-liners may get you jobs. in the job market every little notch on your belt (education, past experience, portfolio, references, etc) matters.

But you still haven't listed something that you can't learn from Google besides something you couldn't learn in college anyway (secret docs).

If you know how to Google search you can handle any computer engineering related job out there.

Fine.. I will be more specific.

Lets say I get a job working at nvidia tomorrow working on their graphics driver.

I imagine they would give me access to any confidential information I needed.

What other piece of knowledge would nvidia expect me to know I couldn't sit down with Google and learn if I needed to?

Even then, it's a pretty worthless challenge. I also find it hilarious that you accused everyone here of splitting hairs Devek, when in reality its exactly what you were doing.

But anyways, enjoy your shitty degree from a shitty college and your dead-end shitty job that apparently only requires knowledge of how to type something into Google.

The ability to synthesize the information they gave you in combination with your past experience to give them something of value that an BA majoring in ancient italian cuisine wouldn't bring.

You get a new job, and your first assignment is: Get laid by Angelina Jolie. See how much google can help you there!

Ask a crap question, get a crap answer.

GED / Certifications should not go together.

Usually Certifications fall under Trade School and GED/High School belong together.
