Is it bad that this video is making me quite angry at my own race?

Not at all, I feel the same way.

Why do so many black people feel they need to conform the the way the media portrays them. Honestly it'd be a lot better if they just focused on trying to be decent people instead of taking every chance they had to show how "gangsta" they are.

Same thing is happening to my little brother, he thinks he has to act all gangsta at school and he's gotten into a few fights because of it. It's really sad. We only have the media and dumbass peers to thank for it though. Because if it wasn't so present in the media and so fashionable and/or perpetuated at schools, it'd be much less of an overall problem.

In the stalls at my high school there's always some sort of sharpie graffiti on the wall that some kid wrote about their "hood" and how much "paper" they make and how they're "ballin niggaz" and whatever.

I make an effort to offer a translatory graffiti with the pencil I have: "Hey, look! I'm setting my people back fifty years!"

My message might not be as permanent, but it's sure as hell more understandable.

I think it was said before in this thread that your skin color doesn't automatically designate how you act. I just wish some of them understood that.

I'm gonna stop now before I make a novel out of this rant.

I feel the exact same way. That's why I don't complain about my little brother constantly emulating everything I do. I'm glad he does actually. Because the only other males around him at school are the "music video" gangsters as I like to call them. I know some people act like gangsters so they don't appear weak to avoid being picked on. But in the long run it's one of the worst things you can do because eventually someone is going to call you out on your "gangstahood".

It's sad this is what our race has become. Any positive talk or movement is called "soft" and usually ignored. With music, good artists with a positive message like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, etc are pushed aside for people like Lil' Wayne. Even in school (I attend a historically black college) everyone still has that "hood" mentality. Fights, smoking weed, downright disrespect for authority. I'm embarrassed for my race as a whole.
