I've searched around and all I have been able to find is a bad link at ffxidats.com on a way to make calls really quite.
Is there somewhere that can explain what I have to do to make them quite / go away completely?

If you want them to go away completely, you can disable all game sounds in the "FINAL FANTASY XI Config". Just uncheck the "Enable Sound" box.
If you want to change them, make them quieter, or disable them without losing other ingame sounds you'll have to wait for somebody else to reply, I don't know how.
I don't know about altering them or making them more quiet, but I do know that it is very simple to swap out the sound files for less offensive calls.
Personally, the only calls that I cannot stand are the whistle calls. <call> <call1> <call2> and <call3>. I made a post on my LS forum a long time ago, I'll just find that and copypasta:
Using POLUtils, I found the location of the calls...
Go to your FFXI directory, it should be under Program Files/Playonline/FFXI. Now look under FFXI/Sounds/Win/SE/SE0000/
Here you should find a bunch of files. They are all numbered. I'll list the last 2 digits:
17 = <call> or <call0>
18 = <call1>
19 = <call2>
20 = <call3>
21-38 = <call4> - <call21>
The first thing you want to do is delete the the calls that you don't want. Then, choose a call that you like, and copy it once for every file you deleted. Then simply rename the copies to match the names of the deleted files.
For example, I think <call16> is a good call. It is loud enough to get my attention when necessary, but it doesn't make my ears bleed. So, after deleting the first 4 calls, I then copied <call16> ( which is number 34 ) 4 times. Then I renamed the copies to numbers 17, 18, 19, and 20. Now whenever somebody uses the first 4 calls, I hear <call16> instead.
Hope that helps.
On a somewhat related note, people need to learn how to use <scall> instead of <call>.
I don't need an orgasm every time I'm in an xp pt....
I wouldn't mind an orgasm every exp pt.I don't need an orgasm every time I'm in an xp pt....
I can't stand when people use <call> 1 to 3. So completely unnecessary. Ridiculous. If you must use one, let it be something like <call10>. I once had a NIN who put that in every macro.
If you want to change or completely remove <call>s from FFXI you can take the following steps.
1.) Open your "Program Files" folder for your system.
2.) Find the "PlayOnline" folder and go into that and then go into "SquareEnix".
3.) Open the "FINAL FANTASY XI" directory.
4.) Open the "sounds" directory.
5.) Go into the "win" directory then go into "se" (sound effects) directory.
6.) Go into the "se000" directory.
The following are the filenames of the various <call>s:
se000017.spw <call>
se000018.spw <call1>
se000019.spw <call2>
se000020.spw <call3>
se000021.spw <call4>
se000022.spw <call5>
se000023.spw <call6>
se000024.spw <call7>
se000025.spw <call8>
se000026.spw <call9>
se000027.spw <call10>
se000028.spw <call11>
se000029.spw <call12>
se000030.spw <call13>
se000031.spw <call14>
se000032.spw <call15>
se000033.spw <call16>
se000034.spw <call17>
se000035.spw <call18>
se000036.spw <call19>
se000037.spw <call20>
se000038.spw <call21>
I recommend you back them up somewhere. I initially just copied <call11> and renamed it to all the others, so every call was <call11>, but then I got annoyed with that and just deleted them.
If you know an update is coming, I recommend putting them back before you d/l the update, 'cause god knows what S-E checks up on these days.
'Sup repost, search is your wut.
Probably I could search for this, and therefore feel free to flame for being lazy and just asking...
But does anyone have or know of a program that could convert, say, .mp3 to .spw? <_<
I've had the call files moved to a temp dir for years now, hasn't affected any updates yet. It's annoying to have the game vol at 0, and yet have calls going off - I don't want to completely disable sound, in case I need it (like that assault rank up quest with the situps?).
On that note, how would I disable only the ffxi opening screen's bgm? If I can just move that spw file (which one is it?) somewhere else it'd be awesome...
To make <call> softer, simply turn UP, yes that is up. the in game music and sound effects, then turn down the volume on your computer speakers or the sound control panel on your operating system.
Basically the problem lies in that <call>s (and the tell chime sound) are NOT affected by the sound effects volume in game. But, they will be affected by turning down your speakers or OS volume.
Which basically drowns out the music I am listening to or the latest anime episode or whatever I also happen to be watching at the same time I am exping etc seeing as I am using my PC for that at the same time.Originally Posted by Jpeg
I replaced calls 1-8 with <call20> a while back,
Best mod I've ever done.
This is exactly why I deleted all my calls. I hated watching a movie on the 2nd monitor, and having the FFXI config for music/effects turned off - and then getting a blaring call. Actually blew out a speaker watching a quiet divx movie when some WHM in dynamis Jeuno had a call on their prot/shell macroOriginally Posted by niisse

Having <call> 1-3 in a macro should be a bannable offense.
I've only ever found one use of call1 through 3. Waking up people who are falling asleep in those 4 in the morning parties, or getting someone's attention who went to take a break, and we get aggroed by something, etc.
Annoying calls are why I play with the sound off on FF. I'm on a PS2 so I can't change files.
This might be a dumb question, but what's the difference between <call> and <scall>?
iirc, <scall> is sound only whereas <call> makes ps2 controllers vibrate.
ahhh ok so no diff for PC users? gotcha lolOriginally Posted by Ichthyos
and since we're here, what does iirc mean?
If I Can Recall? that would be iicr so that's not it...
if i recall correctly
That would be correct.Originally Posted by Ichthyos
It's annoying to that I believe call2 makes the controller vibrate a good 15 seconds after the sound stops....XD
