When I started to get back into anime, I went through this list http://myanimelist.net/topanime.php and just started to download/watch what I hadn't seen. Of course now I follow pretty much every show every season that isn't yaoi and I download any older series that seems interesting

Need to watch a few more animes before Welcome to the NHK imo! It's better to watch once you seriously get addicted to anime, while playing FFXI too much.

Pretty much like me then. Out of the 100 I watched, there is less than 3 I hated (popotan, girl bravo). and only a few more I wouldn't recommend, even if I didn't hate them.

The list I posted earlier consist of the most popular animes. I doubt you could go wrong with any of them, and that's why I would start with those. Not saying other people's recommendation aren't good, I liked almost everything posted, but starting with the bigger one usually allow you to get into obscure stuff more easily after.

In no order, here is a list of my favorite show (skipped the one you listed).

    Action/story oriented anime
-Baccanno!: It's the Snatch and Smoking Aces of anime. Original and confusing story that cover a particular event from multiple perspective
-Black Cat: Trigun-like comedy/action, in a futuristic far east.
    -Code Geass
    -Death Note
    -Full Metal Alchemist
    -Gurrann Lagann
    -Last Exile
-Oh! Edo Rocket! (no one ever talk about it, but it's one of my favorite comedy/action animes. The art was beautiful, and some of the character were pretty good)
-Rozen Maiden (loved the music, loved the show. Never expected that a show about dolls fighting would catch my interest)

    Comedy/school life/slice of life:
    -Bamboo Blade
    -Ichigo Mashimaro
    -Lucky Star
-Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (similar to FLCL..think it was made by the same people too)
    -Minami-Ke
    -School Rumble
    -Seto No Hanayome

    Other:
-Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: (i would probably put it in school life/comedy if it wasnt for the last 2 episodes)
-Shigofumi: this anime is going to make you cry, srsly
-Shinigami no Ballad: same as above, except not as good
-Spice and Wolf: awesome romance story imo, and interesting concept
-Welcome to the NHK: Good anime to make you think about your own problem (hi2u mmorpg's addiction)

"ecchi" means perverted literally, it's just mostly shows with perverted things like chicks with really big boobs, a lot of falling ontop of women, etc. : p

Other than what everbody else mentioned, Shigurui is awesome if you're ok with (occasionally gratuitous) very detailed blood/guts.

Glad you like it, the anime was awesome despite its low production value. Loved the ending song as well

    And chibi Misaki ftw.

try code geass if you like that kind of stuff, well it doesnt have as much violence but the story is unpredictable and will blow ur mind

As much as I like Code Geass, I think the show is extremely predictable. Well, not everything of course, but it's generally easy to get an idea what direction the show will take. Not that it's a bad thing.

I loved elfen lied, but I think they were trying too hard to be violent and shocking at time. I didnt need to see so many 6 years old mutilated bodies to like the show. Not quite sure how it can be compared to Geass (both are good, but they dont feel similar imo).
Another dark/violent/depressing anime is Kara no Kyoukai. There is only 2x50min episodes out, but it's awesome (interesting story, and awesome animation). Not to mention Yuki Kajiura is doing the music...so even more win for me!

Eh, I'll have to disagree. I mean, looking back, yes there were clues, but I don't think the show is *extremely* predictable at all.

Compared to all other shows that are similar to it, this show is very unpredictable (sometimes good, sometimes bad). That's why this show is a roller coaster ride (or a trainwreck depends on your perspective).

I'd say certain things about the show are quite predictable.
Such as the things that the ends that the characters will likely try to reach.
What's unpredictable sometimes are the characters motivations for doing the things they do and the exact ways the go about doing them.

So, it really depends on which perspective you're looking at the show from whether or not you could call it predictable.
In a sense it is, but in another it's not.
