Is it just me, or does it take longer and longer each week for the subbed Soul Eater to come out? >.>

I know what you mean. it sucks D: Don't get D-R's. I've heard it's sort of shitty. Still waiting on Tadashi's. I love their releases.

Yeah, Tadashi does a great job. The only questionable thing in theirs is Shinigami being changed to Grim Reaper.

I think that Grim Reaper is a good translation.

Just like how certain groups did Bleach. Some would call them Soul Reapers, some would leave it as Shinigami.

Direct translations are stupid unless you know what it means already (that's a given). It makes so much more sense to say grim reaper than shinigami, I hate when subbers use direct/literal translations that make no sense unless I take the time to research the deeper meaning given to them.

Gotta love seeing "You're such a baka!" when watching something, I don't think anything can make me cringe that much.

I just thought that his name was Shinigami, which is why I'm not sure I like them changing his actual name.

God tell me about it. Why hello there <insertname>-oneesama! This is so mendokse...

Honestly I never understood why they put -chan and -kun all the time. I just wound up getting used to it after such a long time. : p

Edit: I just saw that Gundam 00 video on niconico and all I can say is wtf?? o.o

You see it more in manga translations than fansubbing though :/

Honestly or they could just take it out. I don't think its common either using big sister in a translation as well. You don't have to translate everything literally otherwise it comes out a bit odd, and there are some things that depending on what language you translate it to, its better to just leave it out of the translation.

Most of the time you could get away with just saying the character's name. For us it makes more sense to refer to your big brother or sister by just their name, or use something like sis or bro to indicate the relationship.

I can't remember what show it was, but the subbers had something like otouto-kun and nii-chan (both chars were talking about the same person). In that case, just putting his name would have been enough. It's no wonder people find it hard to get into anime and manga when translations can be so confusing and shitty.

Because we don't want to have the wrath of the heavens (read: weeaboos) come down upon us for changing their precious onii-chan to bob.

ie; it's much easier to just go with what is currently done then field the complaints/whining/etc. by doing something different. It was bad enough using ordered chapters.

iirc there's a lot of good discussion on the subject at the Animesuki fansubber forum if you're interested.

    eh.

it can be used stylistically, too.

in gg for code geass for example we use honorifics when japanese people are talking but don't when britannians are.

i'm going to sleep so i'll refrain from ranting about the current state of fansubbing at this time.

Sometimes honorifics make sense. I can't remember an example specifically but there have been times where it was used well. Seeing stuff like "manager-san" is stupid as hell though.
