Anime Thread. [Prob not 56k safe]

I just picked up Code Geass season 1, and the plot seems to be moving rather quickly without much explanation for certain actions (I just finished Full Metal panic which had much more build up, so thats what I'm coming from). I'm wondering if it could be a problem with the translation, what subs did most people watch Geass with? I DL'd Shinsel and GG, but found GG to be terrible compared to Shinsen, but still have my doubts.

I believe I used Shinsen, I didnt have any problem keeping up with the plot.

I think I used Shinsen for S1, but it's not the translation. Things do indeed move quickly.

Code Geass doesn't explain certain things til season 2, I don't think it has anything to do with who is subbing it, just how it is set up.

Can you be a bit more specific about "part that move fast"? Some stuff will be explained later, but other scene are just poorly made. Code Geass is at both extreme in term of writting. Some episodes are amazing, but other scenes are just....awkward.

This is pretty much the exact way I'd describe CG.
Some scenes will have you on the edge of your seat, others will leave you scratching your head.

I think the problem is with the writers trying to make characters that none of them can relate to. You can't really write a character that's smarter than you (which is why I believe Lelouch and his brother are the most awkward characters imo), etc.

True enough. I always find myself hoping that Lelouch would do a long monologue to explain every little details he went through, similarly to Light and L in Death Note. It's too easy to find major flaws in his plan, but they always work perfectly somehow.

My biggest issue is the large amount of fanservice in this show. Boobies, loli, mecha, pseudo religious plot, weird flashback, drama, school comedy, ton of character for every possible anime cliché...too much is like not enough. They should stick to a simpler concept

I guess I got that feeling that things were awkward and not well explained. I felt his "transformation" was very strange in that he didn't stay in the background of the character he became, he acted too normal and happy before the incident. The first episode, he goes around making small mention of how he hates Brittania, how smart he is, and then goes about like a normal kid. For someone as cynical and conniving as he is first shown, he really has no reason to go help the terrorist's truck, and then when inside it acts like hes a normal kid. Then suddenly when he gets the power, he changes back from regular schoolkid, scared to die, to this malicious, evil, all-knowing all-powerful being. I'm sure some of that came from the power, but its just weird.

Maybe its just because its the first episode, they didn't have a lot of time to cram character development and reason for actions/personality in. I'm sure it'll explain itself more and the characters will make more sense in the future episodes.

First advice I can give you is keep watching. It took me a few episodes to get used to Code Geass style. It's hard to describe the issue I had with it at first, but I had trouble to accept the world and setting. I assumed, wrongly, that the show was based on a semi realistic science fiction setting (like Gundam).

About Lelouch, you will understand eventually why he hated Britania this much, and why he behave the way he is. Lelouch is narcissistic (there is a reason why...kinda), and that's why you often see him act like he is above everything. However, he is still a nice guy in overall. Basically, there is a part of him who want vengeance , and there another part want to live hapilly with the people he cares about. His whole character (and the show to some extent) is based on the contrast between both part of his personality.

And@wtf at the first episode. I didnt remember this scene (probably because I had no clue who CC was at the time). I guess meeting him was less of a coincidence than I thought.

yeah, it was the very 1st scene of the very 1st episode.
It actually makes sense now though considering C.C. knew his mom.

Kinda, but I'm surprised she was stalking him in Japan after his mother died.

And during the first episode, when Lelouch went near the truck, C.C. was like "finally found you!" in some kind of a mind talk.

I actually have no problem with all the extra stuff that Kaylia talked about. I actually enjoy them because they weren't too intrusive imo, and I like the show not being too serious. As long as you don't take the show too seriously, it's a very fun roller coaster ride.
