In fact Lucky Star has four volumns of manga out already, check out the first couple chapters and if you yawn, stay away from the anime. Smile
You got a point, but I was expecting it to be a little like Azumanga Daioh which is a very similar thing, slice of life type thing with weirdness and Japanese humour thrown in. I get what they are doing but I still didn't find it that funny.
not sure if you have watch either paniponi dash or the newest negima?! or not. Lucky star somewhat giving me the feel in that similar to these two anime. well, those jokes/humour might not suitable for everyone. My housemate after watching the Negima?! , he just likes what the fuck the story line about... since there always popping out some non sense humour and character around.

or maybe you just putting to much expectation on it, just like when i watch azumanga, i was expected something like fumotfu or school rumble like stuff >.>

Kindly never compare these two anime again. PaniPoni Dash was funny from the first episode.

I read some of Lucky Star's source manga. It's terrible. Unless you have quite possibly the world's easiest-tickled funny bone, it's just not funny.

that should have tipped you off on how otaku oriented this show was XD

at least half of lucky star is about "cold jokes" or lame jokes, a lot of asian people find it quite amusing actually

which is why i said i really doubt subtitles especially in western languages would be able to bring the humor to the audiences, which lies in both the way the lines are said and the language itself

like when she said "because i'd miss the animes in golden time" it's "ゴルダンタイムのアニメが視らないじゃん" with the "jaan" end which is in itself has a lot of meanings like "oh obviously you dummy" etc and also a sarcastic tone, there's no subtitle that can put it forth well enough, at least not in english

there's really no way i can explain to you how it is supposed to be funny if you haven't experienced the culture yourself, so as i said earlier, if you don't find it funny just stay away... although i think people who do would appreciate it if you don't criticize stuff you don't really understand

    Never heard this argument before

I've already told you I get these jokes. They are not funny.

Go watch Hayate. Tell me honestly that Lucky Star compares in any facet of comedy to this show.

PaniPoni Dash made dozens of (actually humorous) references in the first episode.
Gurren-Lagann was interesting in the first episode.
Hayate punched Santa Claus in the face in the first episode.

In the first episode of Lucky Star, they talked about food for the first half of the show and spent the other half making references to it.

The only reason people pretend this show is funny is so they have an excuse for watching bright, colorful lolis dance across the screen and make :3 faces. Like in your avatar.

I thought it was pretty cool and I don't usually watch Mecha animes. I loved the way it's animated and the characters.

And the later episode joke is not worth mentioning?

I don't think the first episode is funny though. The later ones are actually more funny.

Read the whole post? I was just showing that the first episodes can be just as good as later ones, and that Lucky Star's first episode was terrible.

only reason I compared it to azumanga was because they had lots of jp onry jokes in it but actually made it funny, priran has the right idea about the show although I'm willing to give it until episode 5 or so before I give it up completely. Next weeks one sounds like they just talk about sleeping...

wait, i don't get what you are trying to say... if you get these jokes, and you don't think they are funny, are you really getting these jokes?

the fact that you said "someone punching santa was funny" makes me think you really don't get it... they are completely different type of humor

in fact, you can't really say they are "jokes" either, the types of humor are called "tsukkomi" and "boke," which are "passive humor" rather than active ones like you saw in paniponi dash (yes, it's different than paniponi dash... not all 4koma are the same)... best example i can give you is kyon in haruhi who's pretty much the greatest tsukkomi in any anime i've seen lol

"tsukkomi" and "boke" are really not "funny" but rather "humorous" in that if people do it well in real life conversation they are regarded as witty and fun, but very rarely do they provoke burst out laughs like "jokes" do

but again, there's no way i can make you understand if you don't really get it by experience (or at least speak a little japanese), i'm just trying explain it well enough to you so you realize there IS another side of this globe and people don't have to be and act the american way

edit: hah i'm feeling like the guy trying to teach borat the "not!" jokes XD

Again someone missed the point of my post. I'm just illustrating that those shows were entertaining. I realize how tempting cheap shots are, but did you fail to notice that I was also comparing a (albeit light-hearted) robot anime to Lucky Star? You don't seem to get that you're preaching to the choir here. I get manzai. I've seen like what, 3-4 anime with this identical format? With this same exact kind of humor? And this is the worst one I've ever seen. And it's certainly receiving the most undeserved attention this season.

Would you watch this show if Konata wasn't voiced by Aya Hirano? Would you watch it if it weren't made by KyoAni, and they didn't dance in the OP? Would you watch this show if the leads were male?

    Visual aid:

    These are interesting anime.
These are dull moeblobs having dull conversations in dull locales that make me want to drive a dull knife into my eye.

i'll admit that the reasons i started watching the show were aya hirano and kyonai (and that OP was a pleasant surprise) but that doesn't mean i didn't like the episode itself

here's the question though, did you think episode 00 of haruhi was funny? cuz i still think cultural difference is the reason you don't get the jokes... i mean if some hundreds million asians thought it was funny (the manga is pretty popular in japan/indonesia/china/taiwan/etc) and you thought it wasn't... was it the anime's problem or yours?

Was it possible to watch the first episode of Suzumiya and not get that it was a parody? ...Was Suzumiya billed as a comedy in the first place?

And yeah, they clearly like it because the show is funny.

Selling an array of colorful merchandise with the cast printed all over it is probably the simplest marketing strategy for a product based on cuteness alone. See: Hello Kitty.
