Personally I like a story that takes you to uncharted territory, or that makes you question the fundamental assumptions you make entering into the story itself. Eva did all that and more, and took me on a ride where I literally felt helpless and in awe, loving every minute of it. The experience was frightening, but wonderful at the same time.
My guess is a lot of people keep themselves distanced from stories for the most part, and what Eva tried to do to them was simply too much. Perhaps we're too used to stories having an ending that makes more conventional sense to us.
