    So Bakuman VA's:

    Saiko = Index's Touma
    Takagi = ZnT's Saito, Shana's Yuji
    Miho = K-ON!'s Tsumugi
    Miyoshi = To-love ru's Haruna

    Miyoshi's VA is the only one I don't really know, think the other 3 are fine. I kinda wish Miyoshi was Ritsu's VA, I imagine Miyoshi to just be a Ritsu with some anger.

    I do, if only to help popularity here stateside. I won't call all dubs the best, but it's kinda silly to blanket them all as bad.

    What is a good dub? I only watch japanese with sub since my japanese is fairly good for most simpler japanese but I can get lost when it gets a little complicated. However, I have friends that watch only subs (Bleach) and I tried getting them to watch something beyond that. I gave them Code Geass as I saw the story is great, but I never payed any attention to the dubbings.

    I'm not gonna bother trying to move a mountain by pushing it, if they wanna try making anime more popular on the stateside, the people involved had to fucking change their business model before anything else really.

    And really, it's easier to blanket them as bad, since remembering which series has good dub is a subjective and annoying matter altogether

    I still can't fucking understand people who says FMA dubbed wasn't bad

    If you're watching an anime solely to pick apart the voice work, I'd say you're looking at things the wrong way. I'm sure a pro-subber will probably come in babbling about artistic integrity being lost in translation or how their weeaboo crushes on VAs automagically make the original superior, but if a story is successfully told and people otherwise don't believe their time wasted, then I'd say whatever dub is provided is "good enough" until Americans actually get their heads out of their asses about cartoons being kids only and, in turn, up the ante on VA performances or maybe even start making their own shows from scratch.

    Like I said in the Naruto thread in regards to the industry kinda QQing about piracy, they need to respect the customer with their productions, too. There's a strong implication that demand is out there, but while "free" is obviously tempting, there are people who will also pay if price matches the quality. A DVD with 4 episodes isn't worth $30, for example. Adult Swim being America's only "free" anime outlet on television isn't exactly helping, either, given the back-handed nature of commentary they make against people who do like the stuff.

    I won't disagree, but it needs to start on Japan's end. There's no reason why a show has to wait 6 months after airing in Japan before showing up here dubbed other than the company producing it keeping translators out of the creation process. Those who might actually tolerate dubs and like anime to some degree had probably watched the subbed version by then. So, a bit of allure is lost here, but I'm sure producers also look at it as not wanting to risk money on a failed show by cross-launching.

    Cowboy Bebop is usually the anime that most people hold up as an example of excellent dubbing. Samurai Champloo is pretty much the same level (made by the same people, etc). Personally, I can't stand dubbed anime. It's probably not always the VA's fault, but it usually just sounds so unnatural. Hell, it's probably more often the fault of the translators. I think sometimes they just need to change the line to make it flow better while maintaining the original context. I don't even know who's job that would be.

    Dub are decent when the show has mature character in a serious setting. When it's kid or character with weird speech pattern, they usually blow.

    It's not really an individual problem. Some insist on making the lips match, which could lead to bad word choices. Some actors might not capture the right emotion or mood for the particular line/scene. Some hear the JP version first and simply get pissed the NA isn't identical. Sometimes translations simply are horrible, but I can't say that's been the case with things that do hit TV here (well, okay, I don't watch kids shows anymore, so dunno). Censoring may be a bigger culprit of content getting lost, too.

    In general I agree that most dubs pail in the face of the original. But, there is one case imo where it turned the unwatchable original into a watchable dub: .hack/sign

    So I do have hope that it can be done again.

    Oh god no, I already get the shivers whenever I see american artist made "manga" whenever I'm freeloading on Barnes n Noble, last thing I want would be anime version of them. I would love to watch a high quality production of Marvel/DC cartoons though.

    As far as business model goes, I personally think the ITunes model would probably do wonder for the industry here, since there aren't enough people obsessed/dumb enough to buy a DVD volume for 60+ bucks like there are in Japan

    I agree with this, as I think it can work in a mature environment, but cuteness and silliness is just plain different between English viewing audiences and the original Japanese source and tends to come out awkwardly. Another area I liked dubs in was Hellsing as I think particular accents are more suited to their original languages whereas you'd never know the character accents when spoken in Japanese. Alexander Anderson's VA is pretty baller.

    True, I wouldn't object to higher quality American-born animation, either. I like both. In spirit, I want people to stop looking at them exclusively as things for kids. When I first started in art school back in '01, one of my hopes was to maybe get in on some more maturely themed animations (let's not confuse this with porn, either. ). I wasn't into anime at the time since me getting more into the internet didn't really happen until '03 along with me finally having my own PC. Anyway, though, seeing how stubborn and archaic the American art world is, I bailed in preference of just keeping my drawing a hobby where I'd draw what I'd want whenever. Someone else can pump out the SpongeBobs or Doras.

    Nonetheless, the "dream" is still kinda there, but when I find myself chatting with art students today or even the odd person out in the field, it doesn't really sound like much has changed. Sure, it's nice when Pixar pumps out something nice now and then, but they've got Disney's budget behind them and they're still largely targeting kids.
