Alexander Anderson's VA is pretty baller.
I enjoyed hellsing's dub, just because Alucard was actually....Alucard

Arukaado just doesn't have the same ring to it.

And yeah, Irish accent was great, but that shit is kinda an exception more than anything else, since dub just butchers pretty much all moe speech pattern and japanese accents.

Don't you just love how Kansai-ben turns into southern accent?

I never got the pet crushes people have on certain VAs. I mean shit, you never see people swooning over VAs over here, but people will like the floor that (insert the VA for Taiga/Louise/Shana) walks on. What gives?

If they're good then that's fine, but why would you watch a show solely based on who is going to be VA'ing in it?

i don't know any voice actor names. I can usually find some that sound similar in random series, and will just think "oh, that is so and so from whatever anime" but beyond that, I don't really care about them.

I used to be like that, I'm not full fledged and crazy about any of them, but for Kugimiya Rie (Taiga/Louise/Shana's VA) I've liked just about every character I've heard her voice. And she does pretty cliched tsundere and I'm not a huge fan of it...but usually the characters are just adorable enough for me to enjoy them. And the fact that her voice reminds me of other series I have enjoyed helps too. Of course, my favorite character done by her is actually Tacos from Saki...

Another one I'm a fan of is Ami Koshimizu, who has done some fairly varied characters. Nina Wang from My-Otome, Kallen from Code Geass, Horo from Spice and Wolf. I can see Nina and Kallen being somewhat similar, but I love Horo so much that alone is enough to make me a fan, lol. And my enjoyment of Horo is the delivery of her great dialogue as much as the content, which is all about the VA.

I'm not one to swoon over celebrities, but certain VA's increase the chances I'll enjoy a new anime based on the fact that I know that VA from previous enjoyable experiences in their anime.

I'mma be racist here, but a lot of Japanese VAs sound the same. I couldn't tell one VA from another, I couldn't tell you (if I had seen two shows that had the same VA) which VA did which voice from another series. I can tell the difference between a good VA and a bad one (well, mostly just from what annoys me and what doesn't), but a certain VA doing some new show isn't magically going to make me watch it.

I really don't understand why it would... but maybe that's just me.

I agree with you to a point...a lot of VA's I go "man I swear I've heard that before, I think it's the same as this character..." only to be wrong and it's someone completely different. A good number do sound the same. I think Kugimiya Rie gets a big name just because she sounds very different from most other VA's.

I've watched some french dubs (some Escaflowne, some DBZ quite a bit of Knights of the Zodiac, etc) on tv and some english dubs on Cartoon Network and from shitty download programs pre-torrent (lots of DBZ, some Trigun, Cowboy Bebop). Dubs can be passable, but they usually go way over the top with accents or other gimmicks (seemingly more so in English, but I was really young when I saw the French dubs). Speak fast? Annoying rattle in dub. Shy/quiet? STAMMERSTAMMERSTAMMER

Dub people are always quick to shout weeaboo, but dubs are usually pretty terrible across the board. I watched Rescue Rangers, Duck Tales and Darkwing Duck etc dubbed Dutch in elementary school. All my friends watched Disney movies dubbed (Flemish at that, because it is soo~ different from Dutch), whereas I watched tapes we brought back with us from Thailand. Going from original voiced Timon and Pumbaa to them being voiced with a hick accent from a province of Flanders? Retarded. And due to nostalgia, some people still actually prefer the dubbed versions...

For dubs to improve, they'd need more input from the original creators and bigger budgets. A lot of game localizations and anime dubs seem to have just rounded up some people from the street and gotten to work. I can understand that people who can watch 95% of their series and movies original language can be a little averse to subs. But I'm very glad that I can watch subbed versions of foreign shows on tv here, neighbouring countries usually have dubs. I wouldn't want to watch German dubbed 24 or French dubbed House any more than I want to watch dubbed Spice and Wolf.

The only time I even think of VAs is when the anime itself makes a joke about it. For example, there was an episode of Gintama that made a blatant Evangelion reference

since the character involved (Taizo "Madao" Hasegawa) is voiced by the same guy that did Gendo Ikari (looking at his wiki, this guy apparently does a shit load of popular anime voices that I actually recognize, like Kenpachi Zaraki from Bleach or Bunji Kageshira from Gungrave).

I usually recognize them, but I feel the same in overall...As long the voice fit the caracter, I don't care who play it.

I don't actively seek specific seiyuu on series I watch, but I do build attachment to characters strictly based on seiyuu every now and then.

That and if a series' plot summary doesn't seem interesting, I usually just look through the seiyuu list before dismissing it altogether. Recent example of this was Arakawa Under the Bridge, I love Kamiya Hiroshi as male lead, and words can't describe my obsession with Maaya Sakamoto's voice

Not all top japanese seiyuus make the anime great (see Kampfer) but good seiyuus can make a great anime better (Bakemonogatari, Spice and Wolf).

Yeah, seiyuu or not, I just flat out refuse to watch blatant ecchi/harem series. There are exceptions, mostly those that focuses on comedy and breaks the 4th wall on regular basis (Seitokai no Ichizon, Maria+Holic, Baka Test, etc).

Speaking of which, rewatched Seitokai no Ichizon again, and holy shit I forgot how hilarious the series can get with its references

I thought Seitokai was trying too hard, but I only watched 2-3 episodes. Maybe I'll give it another shot, it's a slow season after all.

To any and all, is there any worth in a Crunchyroll membership? I saw a deal with Paypal online for what's essentially 3-months free, but I'm not really sure how much licensed anime there is that doesn't get fansubbed anyway.

You can find everything from Crunchyroll on torrent websites (at least the stuff I watch), so, I find it completely worthless.

Depends on your stance on pirating media you like. If you actually want to support the makers and don't plan on buying the DVDs, then I suppose Crunchyroll is as good a way as any to accomplish that. If you just want your anime and don't have any money or don't care, then you can find everything there somewhere else for free. Of course, Cruncyroll is free too if you want to get everything a week late and don't mind commercials.

Personally, I don't feel bad about pirating anything that was released on TV. It was free the first time and it's not like I actually watch the commercials anyway, so the only difference between a legitimate source and piracy is convenience and saving ~2-8 minutes of my time from having to watch commercials per episode (time varies depending on which "legitimate" source, TV or stream w/advertisements). The one week delay on the episodes is just for "premier membership" sales, so I have no problem bypassing those as well.

After seeing people mention Baka to Test in here, I decided to check it out since I haven't really seen a comedy anime in a while and I must say, this is absolutely hilarious. Not quite done with the first season yet, but I'm glad they announced a second one.

I've been using Doki fansubs for BGHK, and they seem good as well. As a bonus, you can pick up uncensored Qwaser from them at the same time.
