Anime Thread. [Prob not 56k safe]

I'd be more keen on Western art if we actually had more quality animations out there, but aside from comics, there's still the whole "cartoons are for kids!" stigma around here and comic adaptations usually get dumbed down to kid-friendly iterations on movies or TV.

It's actually why I hate the whole dub/language debate, as it would technically allow our market to cut corners by increasing exposure. Convince enough people that, okay, animations can be used as a strong storytelling medium (and quite possibly more cheaply than paying big-name stars, working out stunts/FX, catering, travel, blahblah), and maybe we'd start seeing things more stylized to peoples' wishes here. Yes, I'm more than aware of the BESM hate, or over-emotive with sweatdrops and fourth-walling. I wouldn't miss them.

For now, sadly, I have to take what I can get. If that's weeaboo, busted. Pun intended?

Dub cowbow bebop>any dub really

I couldn't stand the Bebop dub, Jet sounded wrong and I'm kinda tired of Steve Blum, the only saving grace was that Wendee Lee used her A voice and it fit.
Otherwise she's a shit actress, she overuses her B voice, which she used as as Maya Natsume, Haruhi Suzumiya, and Konata Izumi. It was perfect for Maya, but totally fucking wrong for Konata.

FLCL, THAT is a good dub. Ghost in the Shell, is a good dub.
Cowboy Bebop is a great anime, but it is not a good dub.

The problem with dubbing Japanese anime isn't the dubbing itself, it's the dialogue. Japanese conversations just sounds corny as hell when said in English, espeically when it's a direct translation.

Reason why a lot of people like Bebop's dub is because the original Japanese dialogues have a lot of the American western movies flavor, so it's not so awkward after translation.

I think the upcoming "Avatar: The last airbender" movie coming up will do good things for the industry in America. After all, it's based on probably the only successful Western Anime that I know of. Speaking of which, it looks amazing judging from the previews I saw in Ironman last night. I need to go watch the series again. I remember it being totally awesome.

1. Ok, but explain WHY.
I backed up my declaration of why the Bebop dub sucks with a reason (The VAs are hacks).

2. I won't argue that. A lot of anime has always revolved around what are basically "personal philosophy of life" bumfights.
Bebop is awesome, because it's writing, setting, and visuals are awesome. The DUB is shit, but it's other awesomeness is enough to carry it through. If they had gotten a better cast it would be EVEN BETTER.

Though, my personal issue isn't dialog, but that the majority of english VAs blow at delivery. I sat through both the sub and dub of the first season of Orphen. In the dub, the main character comes off as much more of a dick (to the point of character assassination) than he does in the sub, because the VA can't fucking deliver his lines with the right inflection, tone, and emotion.

Hey guys, I need some help in identifying an old anime I watched about 10-15 years ago. It was about battlecruisers in space, and the main captain wears a red samurai armor and wields a samurai sword. And one of the nemesis of the captain is enormous gold battlecruiser that has huge ass guns. I don't think it's Space Battle Cruiser Yamato because I don't remember seeing any fight scenes where guys fight like samurais in space without any breathing apparatus. Thanks!

GitS's dub was amazing, and all the voices pretty much fit their characters. Bebop's dub, to me.. is one of my favorites, but I can see how it's not that great. FLCL's is really a mixed bag for me. I prefer some characters with their dubs, but some I like the sub better.

It's sort of like FMA to me. There's some character's voices in FMA that I don't mind, while others I'd rather hear in their original format.

And the "Avatar: The Last Airbender" movie will probably be bad because the acting is going to be bad. The effects look nice, though.

Only good english dub I can remember off the top of my head is Hellsing Ultimate. Probably the only time I actually watched both eng and jp and stuck with eng voices.

I gave Honey and Clover a 2nd chance since most people in this thread since people praised it (and I hate leaving a series unfinished). I'm not sure why I hated it the first time, but I thought it was really good. The comedy was awesome (mostly Morita), but the other characters were great in their own way. I could definitively relate to a few of them.

Anyway, I thought it was good until the ending. Last last scene was bittersweet, but the development in the final 3 episodes was kinda retarded. Make me wish i had stopped before that...

But anyway, it's still one of the best romance I watched imo.
