If I'm browsing torrents on jishaku, or whatever, what is the best way to tell which files are HD or higher format if it isn't listed in a way I recognize? (I only recognize 720, 1080, etc numbers)

I would use Tokyo Toshokan, mostly because it doesn't make my eyes bleed when browsing through. For resolution, I usually look at file size, anything around 300mb (-/+ 50) will usually be in 720p. XviD is usually lower quality than x264. That's about all I noticed, usually most will say what resolution they're in.

Probably best to ask aers though.

There really is no hard and fast rule.

Within a single season of a show, you may need to change groups because your group dies, or eats a C&D, honor a license pickup, or their release pipeline just freezes. (I had to go through about 5 groups to see the entirety of Soul Eater) A group you might like, may not pick up any shows you want to watch. There are dead groups that put out great translations if you hunt down old shows, but it's near impossible to dig up info on them now.
And nowadays, you also have to check which version of the show a group is sourcing on. Though, it's easier now, but when it first started up around the time Queen's Blade was airing, it was a huge pain.

MAL is kinda handy, but sometimes they miss a group. And in the comments rating, fans of a group will often start a small war with competitors. There tends to be a bias towards fast but shit, over slow but quality. To the point that a 24 hour godawful group will get cultists over a 1 week quality crew.

My personal quality list includes, (Some are dead)
ShinSen, Ureshii, FrothBite/MenClave, BSS, AniYoshi, Mazui,
Doki (Can be slow as hell though, especially if they go batshit and jump to DVD source)

I went with gg for Bakemonogatari (& PEM for the finale) and was pretty happy, but as far as I can find out, they can sometimes be as bad as coalguys.
I had a brush with coalguys during B Gata H Kei. I started on Doki, but then they shelved the project, and I tried coal. Hated it. They would throw in fucks and shits where they weren't needed. Finished on UTW despite the fact they had no history, because it was the only option.

There's really no mystery to it, whether you're watching anime full-screen'd or in a window of the file's native size, the greater the resolution, the clearer the picture will be because less stretching is involved or the window itself will be bigger. This should be almost universally true since any modern screen is going to have a bigger resolution than 640x480 and many bigger than 1280x720 which are the most common resolutions you'll see fansubbed anime releases in.

Now if you're talking about having a laptop that's maximum/native resolution is less than something like 1080p, then yes, you're not gaining anything by watching 1080p content on a 720/768p laptop screen because the image would be scaled down to fit anyway. Generally in terms of fansubbed-anime the best you'll get is h264-encoded 720p files, though, so there isn't a lot of guesswork to be done.

Ok, beast. I'm used to pre-packaged best buy rigs that lag on anything at or higher than 720p and now have a laptop that can run blu-ray seemlessly and default res is like 1380 x ~1000. Trying to get a feel for what I need to do differently to avoid running a ferrari on 87 grade fuel.

I think every release on ji-hi has the resolution labeled, unless you mean something else.

There was a point in time where CoalGuys was a part of gg, which is when this shit happened, pretty much.

I'd take MAL fansub group ratings with a grain of salt. There's a cult of worship for a few groups where the people refuse to see glaring issues..

If your laptop can play BDs you should never have trouble playing 720p anime on it, so just go for that.

is pretty good at keeping track of which groups subbed a show, and has ratings for each group on each show and group ratings overall - I'd take them with a grain of salt but usually the ratings are a good indicator. Just read the comments to make sure there isn't some war broken out between fansub groups affecting the ratings.

There's no group out there that doesn't have flaws. Maybe BSS before they died, I'd always use them if available. [Eclipse] is slow to release and their sentence structure/word selection is strange some times, [gg] is trolling half the time but otherwise they are the best. Everyone else is either using CrunchyRoll translations or fails for some other reason.
