It felt waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too rushed. If you didn't read the novel I'd be surprised if you knew what was going on at any point in the movie. I realize the length of the film had a part in this, as you simply can't include everything, but jeez they left out some pretty damn critical things.
The 3 battle sequences I liked also felt rushed. I got chills when going through the novel @ Lancer vs Archer, Shirou vs Archer, and Shirou vs Gil, but I did not really feel anything when watching the movie :/ Severely lacked build-up and well, overall epicness.
I don't have the movie on this comp but going from memory:
Lancer vs Archer: None of the witty 'hound' dialogue from Archer, no build-up towards the true Gae Bolg attack(it's meant to be thrown), and Archer's Rho Aius was bare and simple. I don't remember seeing individual petals of the shield breaking, leaving just one.
Shirou vs Archer: What made me love this fight was Shirou's battle with himself throughout the whole thing. He accepts that his ideal is wrong but it's far too beautiful an ideal for him to give up on. Shirou's fighting stance pretty much changes from being a subpar mirror of Archer's(somewhat precise, swift, each action with a specific purpose) to an unfocused, unrefined struggle in which every attack was one of desperation, throwing his full force into every blow despite every cell of his body telling him he can't do so. Archer is amazed at his tenacity and pretty much lets himself get stabbed, admitting defeat. His own younger self reminded him of the passion he once had, and those long-forgotten feelings. His ideal was wrong, but it was beautiful.
The movie didn't really convey those feelings to me. I realize though that trying to induce the same feelings would be hard to do in the same manner when it comes to movie media. A lot of it was self-analysis, which is hard to do without looking stupid in a movie.
Shirou vs Gil: They skipped the Shirou chant! They at least showed him realizing that his real specialty was not creating swords, but giving his mind form. Wish they had included something relating to his struggle with his magic circuits and his realization that there must be more, since he knew he was specialized to do this one magic.
But no chant and no magic circuit struggle = my favorite fight was pretty much ruined.
One minor thing: I also get the new crest transplantation thing(what? Hentai in ma movie?!), but couldn't they have shown his own circuits illuminating too?
Best pic I can find atm, not the best:
