I think otaku is more extreme than just enjoying something. Otaku to me is like figurines, posters, pillow covers, etc etc. The whole nine yards, if you will.
This looks pretty otaku to me:

Otaku is the obsession over anime. Remember, otaku in Japanese means 'obsessive' and isn't limited to just anime. There's military otaku, game otaku, history otaku, cosplay otaku, train otaku, you name it. If you don't consider yourself obsessed, then you're probably not an otaku. If you can name a seiyuu by hearing a character's voice for the first time, or you know a director and a lot of their previous works, or if you watch a thousand series at a time, then... well, then you just might be one =P
Yeah, I really enjoy anime, but I'm not quite that obsessed. >.>
That's no otaku- that's just his waifu!
edit: Chunin exam start!
edit2: At episode 44 now.. Probably gonna go to sleep for a few hours and continue when I wake up.
FRACTALE Ep2
Hmmmm. how to summaries the episode. it was moe?

Face it. you have feelings for a hologram.
Aria The Scarlet Ammo (Spring Season).
The Trailer for J.C.STAFF next Light Novel adaptation just aired.

I KNEW IT. LMAO
How would you describe one who enjoys anime then, not quite to the point of obsession. I mostly asked because I was trying to come up with one or two word phrases to describe myself and couldn't come up with a clever one for liking anime. Maybe, anime nerd, or something, but that seems plain.
Well ker could be considered a to aru majitsu otaku, and I'd be considered a hentai otaku
Anyway, saw fractale, looks to be interesting so will watch that for a bit, also watched Level E... pretty strange 9especially with the blond guy just poping up outa nowhere everywhere)
Also was wondering... does anyone know where to find Dragon Crisis! Light Novel >.> google led me to mentioning of it but wasn't really findable on any sites.
Anime fan would work. Or Anime watcher. I'm not sure how much your watch or how often you think about it, so it's hard to define from this point of view.
Was there any new information on the series? I saw a PV a while back that was a bunch of stills and text. I know it's based off the LN but I don't know much about the series other than it's lolis with guns.
I look down with disdain to anyone that referred themselves as otaku.
I am not too familiar with the Light Novel content, since I don't really enjoy Media Factory Light Novels releases beside Zero no Tsukaima. but like you said it's Lolis with guns.
Here's first 10 chapters of the manga (personally I lost interest after ch3).

I'm cool with otaku, it's good to be passionate about something lol (unless it takes you into hikkikomori territory...) I used to refer to myself as otaku all the time but... well, my love of anime will never die I think XD but I think I'm not an otaku (anymore...)
I always take it as someone who's kind of an overly obsessed idiot about something moreso than just a hardcore fan since I believe Otaku's literal meaning is taken to mean something like living in another world.
hmmm could be, but I have been collecting hentai/anime/anime+game music for well over 10 years (several TB on the pc) hell I still got Vandread in viv format (wonder if anyone remembers that video format)
btw liking Yumekui Merry... can't wait to see the part where...
Spoiler: show
Kore wa Zombie Desu ka is freaking hilarious.
'Serial killers are scary shit'
'You have some rice...' -breaks his arm-
'Masou-shoujo transformations
Watching episode 2 now... definitely entertaining, one of the top this season that I've watched so far. Feels fresh and it made me laugh a ton.
'Magically delicious eggs'
'Do you believe in UFOs?' (shit, she doesn't) -breakdance-
IS is shaping up to be a harem anime with mech battles. I don't think I'll be able to keep watching it at this rate.
About the anime/otaku questions, thanks for the responses. I was just trying to come up with a succint term that wouldn't be construed negatively as I thought otaku may be, as I rightly assumed. I guess I'll just leave it out since anime -adjective- is rather plain. (e.g. music you can call one a 'muso').
I don't think you can go wrong with a magical girl who's "wand" is a chainsaw.
