The transition into the ED that episode was absolutely perfect. I was bawing like a baby throughout the whole episode (I believe it was at the end of the Train/Field episode), and then that happened and brought a big dumb banana-grin to my face. If anyone had gotten a picture of it, I'm sure I would have had to kill them to defend my manhood. I daresay that that episode may have worked better for an ending than where they went, but I suppose they just couldn't resist one more good wrench on my heart after that...
When I read here that After-Story had the "perfect" ending, I recall thinking to myself "What? Do they bring Nagisa back to life or something? Or maybe she never dies?" and then they went ahead down the death-in-childbirth route after all and Tomoya still got depressed and still gave up Ushio for 5 years. Then the Train episode happened and I thought "Well, I don't know if it's "perfect" as far as a big happy ending, but it is pretty damn close. This should be over right?". I then saw that there were like 4 episodes left and I wondered what the hell they had left to tell. It then went into Tomoya making up with his Father (another highly emotional moment), and then to realizing that Kyou was Ushio's teacher, and finding out that Fuko was awake. and I thought perhaps they were just wrapping up loose ends... then in the episode where they ran out of loose ends, just at the very end of the episode... Ushio gets sick and collapses and there are still 2 more episode >.<. Two eps later, Ushio finally talks Tomoya into taking the trip and I think "Oh, they're gonna go to the field and meet his father well on his way to recovery and find her toy robot and she's gonna get better. Cool." but noooOOOOOOooo. The show isn't done fucking with me yet! The next thing I know, Ushio's status is unknown, and I'm in some abstract RL footage of Japan floating through the air and traveling back in time and POOF~ Nagisa wakes up ,where previously she didn't, and everyone lives happily ever after... and THEN the scene with Fuko? What?
Some of that just doesn't sit right with me. Your audience should never be sitting around watching your show waiting for it to end. Maybe it was different when the episodes were still coming out and nobody really KNEW how many were left? Maybe people were SUPPOSED to be there one week after another asking themselves "Is this the last episode?" and then BAM! Something huge happens? If I had to explain After-Story to someone without spoiling it, I think I would call it Emotional Whiplash.
I find myself wondering if perhaps Tomoya died out in the snow with Ushio and the "Abstract" scenes flying around as the Lights with the RL scenery was supposed to be their souls or something. Perhaps that explains the Fuko scene? Maybe they both died and after living the life out in heaven the way it was supposed to be, Tomoya and Nagisa sent Ushio back to where Fuko would find her under that tree?
Wow... that fits almost perfectly... I think I just made myself sad again.
