It was probably my least favorite episode of Madoka so far (still good though).

Unlike previous episode, I can't say I liked how they developed the character. It feels like the girls aren't saying what they should say to each other, and it makes the scenario (sayaka turning to the dark side) feel forced.

They also killed part of the mystery around kyubey by showing his plain evil side...I prefer him as a troll.

OVA “Hellsing” will re-start in June 2011!
OVA “Hellsing” has stopped to release the new volume since Dec. 23 2009. The final volume is the VII. This time it has been announced that the OVA series will re-start from June 2011!

Yeah, some of the ep 8 of Madoka felt kinda forced but I am kind of glad to see where this show is heading in comparison to the first episode I watched. Kyubey no longer being a troll is sad, but now we just wait for a larger more complicated troll from him more than likely. Can't wait to see how ep 9 turns out; I just hope it doesn't involve any friendship speeches from Madoka. Those are the things rage is made of.

I was expecting something good and I wasn't disappointed. Finally!!! both Science and Magic sides have come into direct collision with Touma and accelerator on oppose sides and although the “jaw dislocating” scene was shown, it was heavily censored.

the hypothesis that Homura is from the future to save Madoka from turning mahou shoujo because she cares about her for some reason is looking more and more likely. Obviously people who said MS turn into witches were right on the money (they had to come from somewhere I guess). The only thing that seems really left to do is wrap-up, which doesn't SEEM like it will hold many surprises, but we shall see...
I'll be pretty bummed if that's it though.

We know at least this much:
1. Homura is not from the present timeline.

2. Homura apparently can't tell Madoka or the other girls outright a. that magical girls' bodies are shells and their soul is in the gem and b. that magical girls turn into witches. That would have been the easiest way to keep them from doing it.

3. She claimed to have tried to tell other girls the same and they just didn't believe her. Meaning either she's lying or she is an anti-magical girl activist for the whole community.

3. She wasn't contracted by QB himself (since he didn't know her power til ep 8 ) or she was but when she went back in time QB didn't know about her anymore.

There's a lot of speculah about Homura's origins - that she was the 'original' magical girl and has since been trying to save them all, that she was helped by Madoka in the future and went back to the past to save her from becoming a MS, that she's the cat from the OP somehow, etc.

I was riding the 'saved by Madoka' train for a while until I realized: Homura doesn't necessarily have to care about Madoka in particular to be watching her - she just has to have the foreknowledge somehow that Madoka has the potential to turn into an unstoppable universe-ending witch. Keeping stresses off Madoka and going to great lengths to make sure she doesn't contract isn't really indicative of a relationship, just that Homura doesn't want the world to fucking cave in on itself. However, ep 8 really showed that Homura cares about Madoka... I think... BUT that doesn't mean the show will take that route, because it likes to do what everyone is not expecting and is pretty good at it.

There are potentially a lot of surprises left: Madoka never becoming a MS is one I'm hoping for, cause it makes the OP even more hilariously wrong than it already is. QB directly trying to force Madoka to contract or basically turning aggressive somehow other than in recruiting would be pretty sweet. Madoka using her wish to do something crazy awesome (bring back Mami and Sayaka, or all the MS who ever turned into witches, or stop the whole operation, or ... there are so many game-breaking wishes though). Can't waaaaiiiitt.

That scene with Madoka and Homura was really weird. It's like she cares, but at the same time she has a plan and is acting it out. She seemed pretty chilled after that scene with Madoka.

As for the telling them about the souls and witches, it's possible that Homura has told Madoka and Sayaka in another timeline and they didn't believe her, so she avoids mentioning it because it might have the opposite effect. I'm not sure if it's a can't tell or won't tell thing yet.

And it's possible that QB did form a contract with her, but she never fought around him or used her powers. Possibly she was the first to find out with full disclosure and didn't trust QB anymore, so now he works on a don't ask don't tell basis.

I'm hoping the end doesn't involve Madoka making a contract and saving the world with the power of friendship.

Most of the discussion I've seen so far is for the ending, as Alto actually choose between Sheryl and Ranka as his love interest.

The movie ended with an Alto x Sheryl ending, but rather bittersweet. It is not a totally happy ending. Sheryl at the end, is recovering from a coma, but she eventually recovers. Ranka is fine, no scratches. Alto actually rejected Ranka in the movie and told her flat-out that he loved Sheryl.

I didn't think Homura was actually from the future, but after last episodes, I guess it's the best explanation we have. I actually like this since it explains her general apathy for everything not related to Madoka.

I'm just curious if she repeated this scenario multiples time (probably not since she seemed surprised that sayaka would make a pact) or if it's the first time she goes through this.

I don't think that Homura has done it more than once, that kind of time-traveling seems like a one-shot deal to me. We've seen Homura stop time briefly, but we don't know how long she can do it before the strain kills her, there might be no possible way for her to actually move through time like that of her own volition.

Thought: Homura had some kind of jeweled ring on her finger in ep 8 when she was talking to Madoka right? It looked like it was pink, too. I wonder if Madoka turned into a magical girl in another timeline (or the future), realized that she was fucked and in a last-ditch attempt to save herself used her miracle-working power to create a time-traveling gem and gave it to Homura with instructions to keep her from ever becoming a magical girl in the first place.

Also, I was under the impression that QB would inherently know about the powers someone who contracted with him would have. He was explaining Sayaka's mutant healing factor and saying that her wish gave them to her and that that was basically in the rules of the game. Couldn't Homura's wish also have given her her unique time-stopping power (or even time-traveling power)? If she became a magical girl with the wish to save Madoka, is it possible the means were reluctantly given to her that way? The catch being that it wouldn't happen automatically, she would have to do all the hard work to save Madoka herself.
