I never claimed it originated in either of those. I only said it existed in both.

It's not an open debate-- we don't know when or how marriage started. All we know is that it predates the Abrahamic religions. Thus, Christians' and whoever else's claims that we would be corrupting the "sanctity" of marriage by allowing gay marriage are... absurd. They didn't even start marriage.
