And I shot with a Canon T1i. I caught some good lighting from a bay window in my living room for my shot of my kid.

Sound advice. Usually when most people think they need a new camera to take better pictures the majority of the time they don't. They just need to learn how to use the one they have better.

Yep, I've seen soo many people buying DSLR's just to sell it on ebay a week after because they are no better than the camera they previously owned(ha). "Understanding exposure" and other settings is a must, otherwise DSLR's are just regular point and shoot cameras that are 10 times more expensive harder to use.

Sadly, the majority of the casual DSLR users simply put it on "Auto" and blow the flash on subjects face. Hey, if you are going to invest in a 1000$ camera at least learn how to take photos without flash in complicated light settings, how to diffuse/bounce it when necessary, etc. Tutorials are available all around the web.

That said, other than the book I posted above you should also read http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101.html . Costs add up pretty fast on DSLR cameras since you may have to buy lenses and external flash in the future.

Tyche's camera is at least 600$ afaik, so keep these in mind before buying one. A 200$ point and shoot may perform just as good if you are not willing to go deeper in photography.
