I think if I remember correctly, it got it's name due to the amount of Italians who used to beat it and they were/are infamous for beating their wives.

In Australia we call them Singlets :D

Singlets would be the wrestling uniform that is used in high school, college, and sometimes the stuff on tv apptly named "professional wrestling."

Tank tops differ from wifebeaters in that wifebeaters are typically white, and sometimes have stains on them lol. Tank tops are acceptable to wear in public, wifebeaters in public get you two possible responses: you are viewed as white trash, or as already said, an italian that beats his wife.
