Quite simply. People are willing to be called fags or niggers by people they know, with plenty fo variance depending on the person. For some blacks, it's okay to be called niggers by other blacks, because you wouldn't expect the term to have a racist context, but if it comes from someone who isn't black, there is the doubt that they meant it with great insult. Similarly, a gay person might feel fine if a friend called him a fag, but not if someone he doesn't know does this. This is elementary. It's not that nigger and black people mean different things, it's that the person who is using it and under what context dictates how people feel about it.

Similarly, if a person starting using the word fag copiously, some people might find that in bad taste, even if he wasn't referring to a specific person. The point here isn't to get indignant like some little shit, but stop doing it out of decency for other people, because they clearly don't like it.

Finally, contending that nigger means ignorant person (or ignorant black person) and is not the same thing as black people in common speech, is like giving racists a free card. When a white guys a call black guy a nigger, he can simply claim that he did not mean it in a racist way, but just that this particular black man was of the ignorant sort, of course, why couldn't he just say that this was an ignorant black man? Apparently, because nigger is not the same as black people. Let's take the white guy's word for it, shall we?

More or less what Kuya said- if somebody calls me a faggot in an attempt to insult me, sure, I don't particularly like it, but I wouldn't be any more offended than if they insulted me in some other way. Granted, its genuinely difficult to actually insult me, I generally just respond to that sort of thing in a way that makes the offender as uncomfortable as possible. It makes the situation a lot more funny.

That said, I use the term "faggot" more than anyone I know, usually just to distinguish between homos like me, and homos that feel the need to do the hand-flippy nonsense and parade their lisp around like its going out of style. Not that their mannerisms are a bad thing- to each their own -but I tend to distance myself from those people.
