I think it's more because of the flash. In the first pic, the flash doesn't hit you directly, and there is light behind you, and in the second pic, the flash hits you directly.

If I actually start using our digital camera I'll have to remember this...but...at the risk of sounding totally ignorant, what if you can't point the flash only (like it points at where you're aiming only).
