Well, to be honest, aren't most if not all enlisted soldiers there because they were either poor, without opportunity, or merit to get a university degree to enable them to become officers (assuming here they wanted to make the military their career), or had no ability, merit, ambition, direction, or other opportunity to make it anywhere else outside of the military? I mean, the only way I'd ever consider joining the military would be as an officer. Fortunately, having a college degree affords me a great deal of flexibility and I don't have the desire to make the military my career.

I mean if I was a teenager and knew I wanted to work for the military, I'd have gotten myself into a University ROTC direct to Officer program with all expenses paid for my degree. This is what my ex-boyfriend did and I thought it worked well for him. He got a degree paid for by the Army, was made an Officer upon graduating (after the required training), and the rest was history. His degree was in nursing though, so maybe its different for the medical services. He pulled out after his time was served and left as a Captain.

I've never said that the above scenario doesn't happen, it happens everyday, people joining for those reason. Personally, I joined because I always liked the idea of joining the military.

And even if the above were 100% true, what's wrong with giving people an opportunity? A career, work experience, money for school, discipline, that's more than you get for going to college.
