I thought the bug was that you could cause Kirin to pop claimed to you, even if you weren't in the alliance that popped him. Or are these two completely separate bugs?

Yes, that was the bug. The patch notes say "unclaimed to the person trading the items" not "pops unclaimed to anyone"

There was a glitch where if you were in the dialogue for the ??? while it was popped it would pop claimed to you instead of the trader of the seals.

The update notes aren't all that clear. Possibly because I have a hazy recollection of Kirin popping yellow.

That happened once to our blms who was close to the ??? needless to say they got hammer'd into the ground pretty fast

It popped yellow when a RMT tried that trick while we were doing Kirin a few weeks ago.
