I saw lots of dogs in Japan.
What I didn't see were a lot of city dogs. Many, MANY landlords in high-rent areas have strict rules against noisy pets, and hide their anti-dog bias behind an easy to enforce 'if it bothers the neighbors it has to go' rule.

Out in the countryside or in the smaller towns skirting the edges of Tokyo you see more and more people with dogs, and not just the little dogs you can fit into a purse, either.

However, the cat/dog ownership ratio I saw was at least 5 to 1. Edit: In retrospect, almost everyone who owned a dog lived in their own house, as opposed to an apartment. The two being hand-in-hand isn't that surprising.

ah probably why then i lived in the mid range area's by tokyo so never saw any, only time I went out to far off town area's was during the boys be festivals during the summer time XD
