from my experience the resist only occurs when a volley of nukes/magical attacks are thrown at the NM all at once then it fades away rather quickly. I can imagine if this was not in the game all you would do is take 6-7blm to fafnir and 2 melee for skillchain and just drop his hp by 40-50% per mb with burst II.

Instead you have to bring 6-7 blm and 2 melee for skillchain and drop his HP by 25-30% per mb with burst II lol

The magic nerf doesn't increase resistance. Well it might but if it does I havn't really noticed. It's more of a MDB effect. If you have 5 blms with similar gear doing 5 MBs it would look like:

    2000
    1990
    1985
    1960
    1950

It doesn't wear off too fast if people keep nuking it either, but it depends on the mob. Faf is gay and hard to get a nice e-peen shot anymore with a few other blms cause it's resistance never goes back down to nothing.

yeah its a minimal change at best but it does piss you off when all that change did was make it a race to get the first nuke in before the change takes effect >.>

Yeah sorry, I agree, I just call it "cumulative magic resistance" because that's what they called it in the patch notes.

I didn't realize there had been tests done, that's actually pretty useful info.

If it's 10 second duration could be useful if planted right during the animation for a SC (even though some groups just Kraken burn Bv2) but I suppose if you're kraken burning Bv2 you aren't worrying much about accumulating MDB nerf

Setting up the -resistance nukes with BLMs seems to be the happy medium for all of this, either way damage or spell# the spamming ni/san cycle may be too much (even for just one element)

For the advantage it can give when added with threnody I'd say it'd be worth trying to figure out a nice cycle that works between your NINs and BLMs.

One thing I have always wondered though, if the Ichi/Ni/San spell does 0 damage to the mob, does the magic effect still proc?

Edit: slow typing got me beat by like 5 posts XD

This was an old question, but as far as I can remember, yeah. I think the only time you don't get the debuff is when you get completely resisted and the message pops up.

On a side note I have an interesting screenshot from ODS on iceday. One blm didn't bring their obi so their ga3 was something like

    600
    600
    600
    660
    660
    600

Then the next blm (who had an obi on) had damage like this:

    650
    650
    650
    645
    645
    650
    650

Which indicates that the MDB build-up is determined at least partially by the quantity of damage dealt.

That's gotta be a record for turnaround testing time lol

Thanks muchly though, now it's confirmed!

You know, something like ODS or Under Observation would be perfect for determining exactly the reduction from the 'cumulative magic resistance'. Knowing everyone's INT and MAB, you could use the first nuke in each orb to determine the scorpions'/hecteyes' INT MDB, and Mdef (if present). Then using that baseline just examine the values from the other nukes to see where in the equation it occurs, and what type of value it is (MDB, fraction of 256, etc) and a rough idea of the min/max penalties. Better than something like Bahamut or KS99 turtle since you only have 3-5 BLMs to concern yourself with, and you don't have people using magic-based WSs like spirits within either.

From there you could also alternate elements (like 2 BLMs use Blizzaga followed immediately by a BLM using Thundaga) to dispel the rumor that it's based on the element of the previous casts.

Landing tornado on kirin immediately following a chi blast or visa versa nerfs the damage of the second. So I'm pretty sure that elemental affinity of the damage has no bearing on the MDB addition.

The whole "Damage resist is based on the element" was from a Speculation thread during the maintenance itself, because of a way to restrict BLMs and encourage greater spell diversity, and the idea caught on and was spread as if fact.

There was never implemented at any time by SE an element-based BLM nerf. The rumor started here though.

Well didnt they say it depends on the mob? I don't remember the exact numbers offhand but it was close to my situation on Faf. Stuff like ODS might have less of a nerf cause of the mob.

from what i've seen on a lot of chain nuking like faf, its MDB caps out at about a 18-20% damage reduction. the most i remember seeing at least.
DL would be a pretty good test subject on that matter.
edit: actually looking at some DL fight logs and its really weird...peoples first and last thundaga 3 doing the same damage(30 seconds of 10 blms manafonting inbetween). it must shoot up mighty fast.
