I had a gun pointed at my face about a foot away by some moron kid who lived in my neighborhood. Damn, I gotta tell you, I was frozen stiff. I had no idea if the gun was loaded or not.

Please tell me you don't think 65 shootings in 40 years covers every violent gun crime in that 40 year period.
Did you even read what he posted? 65 HIGH-PROFILE shootings.

In a 1993 survey conducted by Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz, both members of the National Self-Defense Survey (NSDS), they yielded the most accurate defensive gun use rates to date. According to their survey, between 1988 and 1993 civilians used guns for defense in 2.2 to 2.5 million times per year, which saved 240,000 to 400,000 lives per year. Based on their results, Gertz and Kleck stated that the “number of defensive gun uses is three to four times higher than the number of illegal gun uses” (Otero, Glen. 2002).

It does not matter if it's high profile or not. It matters if it was violent and involved a gun.

Some people have the ability to just completely shake off whats going on in reality and take action. If I had a gun pointed at my head I personally know I wouldn't be able to move a muscle because I would be scared shitless.

don't fucking criticize people who don't fight back while held at gun point if you've never been in that situation, it's not a fucking bruce willis movie

and it's not the gun control policies that cause these things, it's the society morale as a whole in this country; canada has similar gun policies and people on average have a lot more guns than americans do, but the gun related crime rate is bare minimal comparing to what u.s. has

Resolving with yourself in this situation that you'd die anyway, and sacrificing yourself for others is difficult for some, however, I've thought long about this type thing and have accepted this and I have dedicated myself to a law enforcement career.

We're talking about a multiple victim homicide, no?

I understand it's a sampling but, I'm sure the report you did where you got all of those statistics were extremely biased. I could pull up two completely opposing sets of statistics based on whose side of the argument we're on, and some in the middle.

I mean if that really were the case the gun lobby wouldn't need to spend so much money every year making its case, would it?

No I wasn't talking about multi-victim homicide I was talking about gun violence in general.

Cover and concealment and mass groups of people could over power someone like this. Someone may get shot in the melee, however; the chances of a mortal wound are less then dealing with a crazed madman.

    Know your surroundings

Know what you can use as a weapon

Know who is on your right and on your left

Know that the thumb is the weakest spot on the hand, if you can hit a thumb, you can drop a weapon.

Yes, I have had a weapon pointed at me, and yes Im still here to talk about it.

Wow, what a surprise, this thread turned into a combo of gun control and "US sux compared to other countries lol" argument.

why you want a gun? because killing killers solves problems? america just doesnt know any other ways to solve problems w/o weapons and because of those weapon-addict idiots they will never even want an other solution

NRA is about defense and safty, of course, but they do it wrong
go to the parents of those dead kids and tell them weapons save ppl

do the same that was done after columbine, make a NRA meeting in the same city to tell everyone how good it is that everyone can posses a gun
that would make you feel realy good wouldnt it?

if you want to defend yourself why dont you use not-deadly weapons? why does it have to be a gun? america is just sick thats all
look at every other country in the world, they dont have those stupid law from hundreds of years ago made by some idiots
there arent millions of guns available, you cant buy a gun at every corner in big citys and most of all, the ppl in other countrys dont think about killing other ppl first or have this whole "guns are cool" thinking in the population

and the result? their arent over 12k killings with gun weapons every year

i can only feel sorry for the familys of those kids, they realy arnt the ppl who deserved this, those who do are never in danger and talk big shit on their high-horses

I don't see what's wrong with having a discussion about something that is relevant to what happened. If you don't have anything better to add then "lol u guys r arguing!" then don't post.

I think getting information first hand about this shit from people who live at VA Tech and post here is more important than sifting through back and forth arguments by people who can't agree to disagree.
