In a 1993 survey conducted by Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz, both members of the National Self-Defense Survey (NSDS), they yielded the most accurate defensive gun use rates to date. According to their survey, between 1988 and 1993 civilians used guns for defense in 2.2 to 2.5 million times per year, which saved 240,000 to 400,000 lives per year. Based on their results, Gertz and Kleck stated that the “number of defensive gun uses is three to four times higher than the number of illegal gun uses” (Otero, Glen. 2002).
