    Wuts a 1st amendment?

    http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/V/ ... TE=DEFAULT

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) -- A University of Colorado student pleaded not guilty Wednesday to making comments that classmates deemed sympathetic toward the gunman blamed for killing 32 students and himself at Virginia Tech, authorities said.

During a class discussion Tuesday of Monday's massacre at Virginia Tech, Max Karson "made comments about understanding how someone could kill 32 people," university police Cmdr. Brad Wiesley said.

Several witnesses told investigators Karson, who turns 22 on Thursday, said he was "angry about all kinds of things from the fluorescent light bulbs to the unpainted walls, and it made him angry enough to kill people," according to a police report. Witnesses "said they were afraid of him and afraid to come to class with him," Wiesley said.

Karson, of Denver, was arrested Tuesday on a misdemeanor charge of interfering with staff, faculty or students of an education institution.

Running into a crowded theater and yelling fire is not protected by the first amendment, and this is pretty damn close.

He din't threaten anybody, he simply voiced his opinion(put attention, this is the important part) and was arrested for it.

"angry about all kinds of things from the fluorescent light bulbs to the unpainted walls, and it made him angry enough to kill people,"
Dunno how this din't clue you in on how dumb this is.

Making a direct threat is not a necessary condition for people to feel threatened.

After 9/11 had happened, if someone had gone into an airport and said "I hate these fucking security checkpoints, they make me so angry sometimes that I occasionally feel like I want to hijack planes and fly them into buildings", I think you would have a similar situaiton.

WELL DAMN ! Call the 13 year old FBIs, considering how many "i wish i could kill this guy" you get on any given forum. That sounds like much more direct threat to me.

"I hate these fucking security checkpoints, they make me so angry sometimes that I occasionally feel like killing someone"

Yeah, what he did didn't threaten in anyway whatsoever. Running into a theatre telling "Hey, I like pie" is just annoying. You are using a horrible comparison.

Yelling fire sets off a chain of events that could end in tragedy...this isn't comparable. This kid sounds like he just needs psychological help, judiciary action doesn't help the situation at all.

If what he did caused his entire class to feel threatened, then doesn't that fit the definition of threatening?

calling it an indirect threat is a longshot.

it was during a class discussion that he said this... scuse him for having an opinion other than woe is those who died during this tragedy >.>

(back off, it was a tragedy, i'm not saying it wasn't. and it was sad what happened)

but god forbid someone sympathizes the reason he lost his mind and went on a shooting spree. getting arrested for that IS rediculous

Nothing he did was serious enough.. People are effected differently by different comments. Someone who is bigger than me can make me feel threatened but I am not going to call the police.

dont quote me on this, but perhaps its because:

"angry about all kinds of things from the fluorescent light bulbs to the unpainted walls, and it made him angry enough to kill people,"
    his classmates aren't too bright

HOLY SHIT, I read that wrong, yeah I would agree with Divisorytheory. I thought they were talking about the Vtech killer being angry at flaurescent lightbulbs.

Like I said, it is EXACTLY the same as going into an airport the day after 9/11 and saying that you get so pissed off by airports that you sometimes get angry enough to want to hijack planes and fly them into buildings. It is exactly the same thing in a different setting.

Is this supposed to be a reference to the shootings?

College kids sympathize with pathlogical killers all the time in class during discussions, only reason it was a problem in this case was the time. If the kid said "Im angry enough to kill people" (i think the story said he did if i read that correctly), then he needs psychological help, not jailtime.

Edit: I think Kuya has had that sig for a very long time.

Well, they didn't say the verdict. He might be getting psychological help, we don't know.

I still hold, that at least 90% of the world's population could use some psychological help, but hey, wait, no, "I'M NOT CRAZY!".

sure, give him psychological help. but if people are arguing that the classmates are pussies and they should have said "wow, interesting opinion. nice to know frank. NEXT" then you're fucking crazy.

"I think Cho whatshisname was being corrupted by the chaos god Slaanesh, and was driven to kill for the sake of spreading fear and horror on Earth."

Technically, I just did exactly the same thing as that guy, do I get V& for it? (if you don't get the reference, go read about the warhammer40,000 backstory, it's pretty cool). How about if I put a keychain on my backpack with an obscure ancient religious symbol on it? Does that sound fine? How about if it's almost identical to a Swastika?

Seriously now, yelling fire in the theatre is used as an example because it can predictably put people in immediate danger. Making some scared, oversensitive Americans nervous doesn't, unless maybe one of them decides to tackle you right there. "I feel threatened" is not a valid criminal accusation, dammit.
