Unless he turned into the Joker and got this gigantic sadistic grin on his face, I don't know a single person who would bother to report someone for saying something so sarcastic.

I can name 6 people that I went to school with who would and it would mean nothing.

In middle school I was playing football and a black dude made a touchdown. I yelled, "Nigger!!" A yard duty or whatever their called today heard me say it, looked at me, and did nothing. It was funny.

If someone said this, and people knew he wasn't joking, the smart thing to do would be to aprehend him.

"Man these lights make me wanna kill people."
I don't see how anyone in their right minds wouldn't just think:

    A: Hes crazy

    B: Maybe hes joking

GUYS COEM OEN YOUR ARGUING THAT A GUY SHOULD BE CALLED ON FOR SAYING BRIGHT LIGHTS MAKE HIM KILL PEOPLE

I just think theres a difference between saying something like, "hey dude, yeah, see those lights, god they make me wanna kill people" vs. "hey dude, yeah, these voices in my head keep telling me to kill people."

I'd let the first comment go, I'd report the second.

But hey, don't report me to the cops for thinking that the guy in this news article didn't deserve to get charged with anything. I'm not crazy. Its just going to be a really sad day when you have to end anything you say with "I'm not crazy fyi" just to cover your bases.

Just say no crazies, Xav, much like no ho check.

Anyway, wasn't this a violation on the guy's rights to freedom of speech, especially considering where and in what conditions this took place? I would assume he could sue for this.

That's just really, really pathetic. If I got arrested for every time I said a sarcastic comment like this, I'd be arrest at least 1 time a day.

Sometimes when I see a Cow I think about how funny it'd be to tip one over...someone report me for thinking about cow-tipping, since its a crime.

I could be wrong, but unless I actually lay out a plan for commiting a crime, I don't think theres even legal action to take against me. I was pretty sure the 1st amendment protected me from thoughtless remarks, unless Minority Report is already coming true.

It is NOT the same thing. This was a discussion. He voiced his opinion on what he thought about the shooter. It would be like talking about the terrorits that perpetrated 9/11 and understanding some of their feelings and telling people that.

The premise of Minority Report relied on prescience, not telepathy. So you would have to actually do it in the future to get that guy to show up. Not to mention you'd have to be in DC. And if the crime in question is related to terrorism, I'm pretty sure you can get arrested and put away forever for "planning" something. Normal crimes are different, of course.

As for the sarcasm question, that's where you have to take into account the way he said it, not to mention his exact wording (which may or may not be accurately reflected in the quote). I definately wouldn't put it past an American to fail to catch sarcasm and have someone crucified for it.

The society has been driven by paranoia and fear ever since journalism met big business.

Exactly, and since we don't know whether or not this kid was joking, except based on our assumptions, I think we're all in agreement.

Not disputing propoganda, just the intensity is far more public since 9/11.
