I used a dotaitos, donkarasu, dotakun (heatproof ability is superior), a haunter, and a rentoraa basically for most of the game

Later on in the game, I think after Gym #3 you get the Soothe bell, which makes friendship increase faster. Like Pri said, you can just catch a roselia. But the Soothe bell will really help with Hapiny and Golbat and Eevee evolutions.

edit: HELL YES False Swipe is a purchaseable TM. :D

trainers will send out pokemon that can counter your own's weaknesses, and the gym leaders and such have pokemon to cover the weakness of their type, like the psychic elite four's medicham (which doesn't know a single psychic move, just 4 elemental punches)

Ya. In double battles trainers will actually exploit the weaknesses of your pokemon and pick their target based on strengths.

What's so good about False Swipe except that it helps to prevent weaklings/Legendary from dying so you can capture them?
