Do you get first shot on Mespirit regardless of speed since he's running, or Do I need decent speed? Rather not dick around and mess up a chance to test.

I think I tried hitting it with False Swipe a few times and it ran away before I even got to attack. I managed to use it after leveling some though, my Weavile has ~120 speed so I assume Mespirit has less than that.

It's based on speed, but Mesprit's speed isn't particularly amazing anyway. (80 base).

I used a like Lv.40 Donkarasu to Mean Look him, then beat him down to a sliver, then fled and used Quick Balls to capture him, eventually.

Also, to the person having trouble with Heatran, Ultra Balls suck. Heatran is in a cave, so use Dusk Balls.

My 80 infernape wouldnt hit first (dont know the #s), but meh.

And yeah, dusk balls are better, but still all luck. I went through 20 dusks and then got Heatran on the 10th ultra ball. 1pixel HP left with no status'.

That's incredibly odd. Were you wearing a Macho Brace or something? Your Infernape has almost 30 base Speed, and 30 levels on Mesprit.

Yeah I know status' help, but meh, I didnt have a pokemon with one available, I knew id catch it eventually. And my infernape was weaing a shell bell (recover 1/16th dmg done).

Here's the catch rate formula if you were curious. It shows exactly how important status effects and special pokeballs are:

( ( 4 * TotalHP - 2 * CurrentHP) * CatchRate ) / TotalHP + Status

CurrentHP = The wild Pokémon's current HP.
TotalHP = The wild Pokémon's total HP.
CatchRate = The wild Pokémon's catch rate, listed below. This can be modified
with the use of different Poké Ball types, listed below.
Status = If the wild Pokémon is Asleep or Frozen, it equals 11. If the wild
Pokémon is Paralyzed, Poisoned or Burnt, it equals 6. Otherwise,
it equals 1.

After all these values have been calculated, the game computes a random number
from 0 to 255. If this random number is less than the number calculated above,
the Pokémon is caught.

Zomg I just caught a shiney Tentacool. I feel special now. 8)

Too bad I will only use it for the purpose of evolving it into Tentacruel to see how it looks.

Everstone on the ditto to pass on nature. This is where having your 15 dittos with various natures, or even 5 of the "common" natures, and at least 3+ 31 IV stats. That way you can filter all your pokemon through the ditto rendering really awesome babies with perfect stats in the stats you want, and reasonably good stats in the others with a decent amount of time spent hatching them.

Breeding is extremely easy since Emerald and D/P is just as easy, just be patient and you'll end up with some really good pokes. Only problem is if you are on D/P only and have no Emerald you have no way of mass catching dittos to get the correct IVs/Natured Dittos you need. Try the trader, I'm sure someone has cloned their Emerald Dittos and put them up.

edit: Everstone only works with 4th gen pokes breeding or 3rd gen pokes breeding, won't work on Pal Park pokes and 4th gen pokes trying to breed.

In other words:

Pal Park Poke Male + Pal Park Poke Female@Everstone = Baby with 50% chance of Nature of Female Parent.

4th Gen Poke Male + 4th Gen Poke Female@Everstone = Baby with 50% chance of Nature of Female Parent.

4th Gen + Pal Park = NO! Random nature for you!

Usually I think shiny ones are sort of uglier than the normal ones, but I like that shade of blue.

Ignorant breeding question time: If you breed two non-shiny Pokemon, could the egg hatch into a shiny one? Even if it was only the 1/8000whatever chance, I'm wondering if that would be better than risking running into other Pokemon if you're hunting for a specific one (I just know my only shiny, someday, will be a Zubat or a Geodude or something). Hatching eggs isn't really a hardship since you can just press the up or down arrow biking through Solaceon Town and turning when you run into a wall. With the sound on, you don't even need to look.
