Re: Official Final Fantasy XII - Revenant Wings Thread

Sorry for the necro bump. But I did a search and I think this is the best place to ask.

So I just bought this game for my stepdad, it's hard for him to use his left arm due to a stroke he had a while ago. But he recently got a DS system for himself and I wanted this to be his x-mas present. I figured it would help him use his left hand a bit more and wouldn't be too difficult since it's a RTS game and there's the Gambit system.

My question is what do you guys who've played it think? Is the game easy or hard?

Really? Only after 3%? The game does pick up in difficulty as you keep progressing, different scenarios or circumstances that you have to deal with. Albeit, I'm only at 20% or so done myself, on Chapter 4. I can't lie, I've had some easy fights, and then I've had some that I had to retry 4 or 5 times before I get it (sneaking Vaan into that temple solo was a bitch, I wouldn't let him get in there without getting all the treasure!)

It's an ok game, not anywhere near as good as the original FFXII clearly, but I do like it. The nice thing is, you can do pretty much everything with the Stylus, so if your stepdad does have a real hard time with it with his left hand, he can use his right hand and manage everything. The D-Pad only controls the camera, so if your stepdad decides to use the buttons, the more complicated controls are for the right hand, so it could be pretty good for your situation.

Honestly, the biggest question would be whether he likes the gameplay or not, lol. It's like a mix between Age of Empires and FF:Tactics.

The game is actually fairly difficult towards the end, as long as you dont over level. If you just do the main story, youll be in trouble at the last 2 or 3 chapters. Looking from an RTS standpoint it's also fairly refreshing, most RTS battles just are "defeat all enemies, one ally must survive" deals, alla FFT, but RW adds alot of twists, which is nice.

Imo this game was alot better in both gameplay and story than FFXII.

And Penelo is alot hotter in her new cloths :Q

I just thought it was way too simple for my tastes... nothing to actually do during fights other than summon random monsters to help you and telling them and the other characters what to attack isn't my idea of a fun FF game.

There's another way to play an RPG? Wow, I didn't realize that they had invented any "the characters attack whatever enemy they want without your input" games. Sounds like fun.

All you do in this game is click where you want them to go/who you want them to attack.. no menus, no anything. You just sit there and look pretty while they automatically attack shit.

Yes, it's boring. And you don't have to try and be a smartass about it, you knew exactly what I meant.

So...what is going on with a non-DS version? I want to play this game at some point but no chance I'll be getting a DS anytime at all.

I finished it myself and I have to agree this game wasn't that good. It was pretty much me just hitting the X button (to select all of them) and then clicking on the screen where to go, then wait for the end result.

It seems like they were trying to "simplify" the C&C/*craft RTS formula by taking out the resource gathering a production aspects, and making it more hero-driven and stuff. But without resource gathering and production, an RTS is really just "go over here and hope you don't all get killed guys!", just like the second half of this thread says. Oh, and the plot doesn't seem like anything special so far either.

I actually kind of like the story; if you talk to all the characters between story missions, and read the logs and entries, do the board hunts, it's a pretty interesting story. It's not epic or anything, but it's pretty decent. Probably say it's FFTA level. I actually liked Vaan and Penelo this time, if only because they actually DID stuff this time.

The system is unimpressive. I have literally taken a group of heroes/summons into a battle, lost HORRIFICALLY, then gone back in with the same group, done the same thing, and won easily (Balthier/AngryBanthaa fight). If it had been turn based, and thus involved more strategy, it would have been a lot better. If they'd learned more towards classical RTS style, and added more complexity to the battles, it would have been better. After I got all of the level 2 summons, I stopped really caring about the level 3s-- it's just a different monster you can only have one of which is barely more powerful than a hero. Well, maybe Tiamat. Mighty Shield is pretty hot.

Re: Official Final Fantasy XII - Revenant Wings Thread

I think there is more strategy than people give credit.

If you adhere to the Flying/Melee/Ranged system and actually micro your units you'll find it's much easier to control the flow of battles. Also, strategically attacking one area with a group of espers, forcing the enemy to group in that area and going to capture gates in the area they leave undefended is fun too. I will say, microing is incredibly hard in the game. They try to predict who you want to select and there is no "double click" to select all the one type of unit, really frustrating. Eventually I'd try to rid myself of espers early on in fights to later summon then into particular groups so I could micro more easily. It became alot more fun at that point.

Late in the game they try to mix groups of Ranged/Melee and Elemental Weaknesses, but you can usually check out the field of battle and decide which type of espers you want to use. Eventually I just ended up using Neutral Espers unless an elemental advantage was truly necessary, like in Rank III Esper fights.

Overall the gameplay is underrated because the people playing the games aren't all that skilled in RTS games I think. I had no trouble finding a way to utilize the control system to my advantage and found it fun after awhile of getting used to the system. The story is horrible, the typical "good natured boss only wanting to do something right but really wrong". The addictive aspect to me, that kept me playing for a few days was the fact that it was fun getting all the espers unlocked and finding new battles to challenge my previous strategies.

One part of the game I really hate though is the way things will just constantly summon from random areas periodically. It's frustrating when you're trying to strategically attack and 3 tigers things come from behind and distract your units, and you're forced to micro the units again and attack the correct targets due to the stupid auto attack system (it's not even move-attack, it's like move-take some hits lol-attack-move again). Another stupid part is the crystal battles in the bottle neck form maps. You are decimated by aoe's therefore forced to micro, which the game doesn't support at all very well, and then you're forced to struggle to the end before they focus all their units on the one remaining portal. It's really shitty early on when this happens when you don't have access to all of Kyte's AoEs because you have to rush the crystal and pray you don't get AoEd.

    @above

You can choose to make the game more difficult by playing it the way you did, but that doesn't make the game well designed. As long as you can grab all your guys+espers and march through each map, the game fails to be strategically interesting. People shouldn't have to give a game artificial challenge and strategy by imposing more difficult play styles upon themselves. It has nothing to do with someone's "skill at RTS" as you put it, and everything to do with poor game design that allows the same result to happen if you choose to micro-manage or if you choose to just romp around every map with the same hero and esper set-up.

Re: Official Final Fantasy XII - Revenant Wings Thread

I got this game for Christmas and got all the way to 50% in the first 2 days of owning it. I'm at 83% now and just completed the first part of chapter 9 (my playtime slowed down when I went back home and back to work).

I've enjoyed this game a lot so far. The storyline is satisfying and the characters all have interesting story (compared to FFXII where I felt Vaan and Penelo could have used more). There's a lot of humor going on with the inter-character conversations too. I've made sure to go back on the airship after every mission and talk to everyone to see what new things they have to say.

Up until chapter 8 the battles were pretty simple. The final battle of chapter 8 took me a couple tries, and chapter 9 seems like it's not going to be any easier. I haven't leveled up at all yet, I've only just done the regular missions and all of the hunts except for one (the one where you have to fight the 3 people from the other sky pirate group and you can only bring 3 of your leaders with no espers...I've tried, like, 10 times and haven't been able to beat it).

I hope to finish it soon, but I really have only played my DS or PSP when I'm on the road and still have Mass Effect, Persona 3 and some other console RPGs to beat as well. >.>
