    Souleater + Sentinel = Flamebait

    At the risk of inviting a torrent of flame for what may well be a top competitor for "Dumbest Idea of the Year" I thought I'd try tossing this idea out. I seem to remember reading that -% damage gear directly affected the damage taken off of souleater's kickback. EG: a defending ring would nix 10% of the damage you'd take from souleater without affecting your offensive power.

    My question is, would the effect of sentinel's damage mitigation affect the damage from souleater in the same way? if so, a kraken drk could fire off more than once every 2 hrs, albeit at under half capacity and for far less than the full duration of souleater due to the degradation of the damage mitigation. Also, the added enmity of sentinel might prove fatal before the effect of souleater.

    To only further increase the heretical nature of this idea, what would happen with a pld/drk? One could garner quite a lot of hate with sentinel/souleater wielding either a joy or a kclub (god help a kclub pld...) and being a pld, they would love more enmity, though the long gap between castings limits the value of this somewhat. Adding in the other tools of /drk though, such as stun, bind, sleep, etc. Taking a page from the nin/drk handbook makes me wonder if this might be a viable tank, if not for universal situations, at least for a few unusual fights.

    First of all, I don't think Sentinel would affect it, though I haven't tried it so I'm not sure.

    Secondly, even if D. Ring affected it, wouldn't it only be -10% of the 10%, so 1%?

    granted. i'm not arguing that dring should go to drks for souleater. that's silly. the point is to show that damage mitigation works. if it doesn't, the whole argument is completely pointless. the wiki page CLAIMS it works (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Soul_Eater) but then we all know how reliable wiki is.

    if my drk weren't only 11, and my pld 1, i would do it myself. unfortunately, i'm a mage boy with my highest melee job (not counting blu) my 37 nin.

    also, the reason why i'm thinking about alternatives to "just cure him" is, with a piece of souleater gear on, if the club procs for 8 hits (not exactly common, but not rare enough to discount) that's just cleaved off 96% of the drk's HP in a single stroke (8*12=96). that's quite an MP sponge, to say the least. it's surely an out there idea, but it seems like it might be worth playing with a little to see if it's any use.

    its not exactly like that, it'll count off the hp he had after the previous one. 12% of the current hp when he hits, then 12% off that, then 12% off that, etc.

    touche. i concede to more knowledge than i have. still, .88^8=36% hp. still requires a big ass cure and puts the drk well within 1 shot range. plus, based on what you said, you stand to do nearly 32% more damage on an 8 hit swing with damage mitigation.

    Just did a Wild Mandy test outside of windy.
    PLD/DRK with -33% Physical Damage Taken gear.
    PLD/DRK with Sentienl
    PLD/DRK with -20% Magic Damage Taken gear.
    RDM/DRK with Phalanx.
    Every time, one swing resulted in a 10% loss of HP.
    Maybe Dring is different, but so far it just looks like Stoneskin is the only way to block the damage. Updated the Wiki.

    if you want to test if % damage down gear affects it, you can always try swinging with an earth staff and see if it goes down to 8% per hit. still, if the others don't work, i sincerely doubt any % damage down works at all. thanks for trying it. one more perfectly stupid theory out the window.

    Correct.

    Souleater with D ring = 1306 --> 1150

    Souleater without D ring = 1306 --> 1150

    It's a cost, not a "damage".

    It's a cost, not a "damage".
    So, we need to look for items in the database with "Conserve HP" then. Very sneaky Square.

    I'll fix the wiki then. Assumed Dring wouldn't affect, but didn't know for certain so only changed it to 'possibly affected by -damage' gear, when I naysayd -magic, -physical and phalanx.
