Even if you could "bend" space to place two distant points next to each other, the very force that is bending it would make your journey between those two points extremely difficult, I would think. Not in a "crush you" sense, but assuming you could make the trip intact it would probably take at least as much energy to go from A to B in the midst of such forces as it would have if you were just going to the long way normally, despite the reduced physical distance.
It's actually theoretically proven that adding ghost radiation to a wormhole would cause the wormhole to open and stabalize and allow for at least quantum sized particles to pass through.
If one could open a wormhole big enough by supplying enough ghost radiation, it would be possible to travel through it without being destroyed. If you add too much ghost radiation theory states that a new universe would be created. Too little and the wormhole becomes a black hole as you travel through.
The energy needed is huge, but not impossible. Like Khamsin just said it probably would be extremely difficult sending anything through such a system, but who knows. All we need is a possiblity, from there we work out whether or not it's physically possible. It doesn't violate any known principles, that's for sure.
The only evidence we have that it does not work is anthropic in nature. One would expect, if it is possible, that we'd see aliens around town. Fermi's principle I think it's called.
Are you high? You can't claim any knowledge on what they would use for travel and what physical constraints they would encounter, you can only do that with HUMANS. Stop anthropomorphizing aliens, it's ridiculous.Originally Posted by Enkidu

Newsflash - we aren't happy being on just one planet now.
Wow you really need some reading comprehension.I find funny you are denying the potential of quantum computer, when you talk about wormhole so openly. >_>
You say it's useless for modeling the "galaxy" to find life? Hell, that's exactly where we would need quantum computer. They arent better because of the fancy name, they are better because they they are much faster than conventional computer, and multiple state allow you to calculate exponential stuff a lot more easily.
1. I never claimed quantum computers don't have potential
2. I never claimed they have little use
3. I claimed conventional computer are better at classical computations
4. I claimed that quantum computers are better at random computations
Now how did you go from point A to point X? If there is a civilization that has been around since 8 billion years ago, I'm sure they have quantum computers. They probably look at them as we look at caveman handprints on cave walls, however. [/quote:4bade]
1st: read my reply to Zhais post, I explained why your hypothesis isn't possible, borderline stupid
2nd: "want to test water?" Wth is that suposed to mean...everything is the same everywhere.
3rd: Out of the infinity of galaxies out there, all could hold life... or almost all. Everywhere look the same. Your point is kinda moot.
4th: I know for fact they would encounter same physical constraint as us, added to the physical constraint of the "higher level" physics we don't know.
5th: I dont care if you are happy with one planet or not, if physics doesnt allow you to colonize the universe, you wont be able to do it.
6th: Conventional computer wouldn't be better than the theorcal quantum computer. Whatever you think, it would be of great use in the modeling of a galaxy
7th: Quantum computer arent magic and wouldnt allow you to do anything "special", just more powerful version of what we have. Same could be said about any other technology aliens have. O

Probably more if you want to maintain a certain level of stability in the worm hole. I also wonder how you can control the "exit" in those wormhole. Making a hole is one thing..opening the exit is another.Originally Posted by Khamsin

i.e. if one can travel in a fourth dimension of time, does that mean that we exit how we existed in our current dimensions of x-y-z?
All dimensions will exist with respect to all other dimensions. X-Y-Z isn't going anywhere no matter where you are on the... W axis (or whatever you want to call some arbitrary other dimension).
Although everything that was in X-Y-Z at W=0 doesn't have to be there at W=1, if that's what you're getting at.
theres only 1 real problem with time travel...
theres only 1 sword that helps you control your time traveling ability

First, You act as though our current state of technology has already reached its peak. Second... in none of his posts is he trying to break the laws of physics. Nowhere is he saying that we can reach any galaxies with only a few days' trip. He's saying that, due to the human nature of being young compared to the rest of the universe, it is POSSIBLE that SOME OTHER BEING in a possibly CLOSE galaxy has the technological capacity to visit other planets, systems, and galaxies. I fail to see where this possibility is breaking our known laws of physics.
With our current technology, any travel of this kind would be massively inefficient and lengthy... but its possible.
If you look at galaxy formation, yes, they are 10 billions light year away...and more now. I was replying to your comment about galaxy being formed, I'm not sure why you are acting like we were talking about something differentOriginally Posted by Zhais
In any case, it doesn't matter, because it's not possible to observe another galaxy to a point where you can detect a planet with life. Cloud of hydrogen, and other thing are going to make it impossible for you to detect an Earth-like planet.
I already explained many time in this thread why physics doesnt allow us to colonize space as easily as you make it sound. It's not that physics doesnt allow a ship to travel in space for 1 billion years under mechanic physics law. It's just that it's statistically impossible that it will happen, when you include every factor.Originally Posted by zhaid

His post didnt make sense in many occasions
1) Observe distant galaxy and draw accurate model: wrong
2) Some galaxies are made of space dust: wrong
3) His "worm hole" post require matter that doesn't exist
4) space ship moving at high speed for billion of years, without collision with space dust? Carry enough energy to suport a 1 billion years trip between galaxy? Can freeze body for 1 billion years and unfreeze them no problem? It wont happen.
And you break physics law the moment you assume there is "faster than light" method to travel, which is implied when you talk about about inter galaxy space travel
Ok please can you get it through your head that nobody in this thread said that aliens would look through a telescope and see humans walking around. PLEASE! Re-read previous posts, you seem to have the reading comprehension of an 8 year old.Originally Posted by Kaylia

Wow what kind of kool-aid have you been drinking? You should work for MIT or something, you seem to know exactly how far our technology will reach - I'm sure they'd like some insight. Maybe NASA too.No, our technology didnt reach his peak. However, large scale colonization of space is beyond that peak.
Wrong with our current technology, prove future technology could not do this, and don't use hand waving (do you even know what handwaving is?)1) Observe distant galaxy and draw accurate model: wrong
Where did I say this? I said they could observe dust, just like we can (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/20 ... 134630.htm). Since we're assuming these aliens have experience in galactic travel, perhaps they may have insight as to what to look for when viewing a galaxy? Perhaps they could pinpoint regions which have high probabilities of forming solar systems? Let me guess, this is a physical impossibility due to statistical improbability and some law of physics, right?2) Some galaxies are made of space dust: wrong
Negative energy doesn't exist? There was a book by Kip Thorne from years ago that proposed a model for sustaining a wormhole, the design was crazy, but it is possible.3) His "worm hole" post require matter that doesn't exist
Straw man city. Why does the ship need to move fast enough to get damaged from dust? Why do these aliens need energy support (hint: aliens =/= humans)? Why do they need to be frozen?4) space ship moving at high speed for billion of years, without collision with space dust? Carry enough energy to suport a 1 billion years trip between galaxy? How is that implied? It wasn't. Anyways if wormholes are able to transport, no matter how difficult it would be, then it would be a form of pseudo-superluminal transport. But let me guess again, statistical improbability, lol...And you break physics law the moment you assume there is "faster than light" method to travel, which is implied when you talk about about inter galaxy space travel
You are changing your story every time. In your first post, it was a computer developed model of the formation of galaxy. In your last post, it was simply looking with a telescope at the nearest star (like we are doing).Ok please can you get it through your head that nobody in this thread said that aliens would look through a telescope and see humans walking around. PLEASE! Re-read previous posts, you seem to have the reading comprehension of an 8 year old.
If you go back to my first reply, I asked you to calculate the size of a telescope you would need to find a planet the size of the Earth at 1000 light years, but you kept giving me example that were bigger and bigger (and less possible).
I will explain it later in this post...you still own me a wormhole explanation. You said it was not possible, what happened to that? Statistically impossible? PROVE IT!
Not exactly how far, but in a limited environment, our technology is going to cap sooner or later. It's safe to assume it's going to cap before we reach a level able to destroy the universe (infinite energy source), or attain the speed of light.Wow what kind of kool-aid have you been drinking? Light source |||| Wall |||| observer
Light source can't reach observer, therefore, observer can't determine what the light source is.
In a 3d world where where you are stuck in particular point, it's never going to be possible to observe completly a 3d object, especially if there is stuff blocking the path. While it's true X-ray analysis can be used to "see thought" object, it will never give you enough info to construct a perfect model of a far away galaxy.
There is also major difficulty concerning the method to collect all the wave length comming from a galaxy and separating object from each other. You can probably distingate the biggest one, but star the size of the sun are going to be mixed together. With 300 billions of star per galaxy, and hundred of thing to take in consideration for your model (you would need 2 picture taken at different time to have an idea of the evolution it's following), that model would require an impossible amount of data to calculate on a computer.
" the formation of THE RIGHT KIND OF GALAXY (ya know, like I made sure to mention about) would definitely involve tons of dust. And this would be quite visible."Where did I say this? I said they could observe dust, just like we can (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/20 ... 134630.htm). Since we're assuming these aliens have experience in galactic travel, perhaps they may have insight as to what to look for when viewing a galaxy? Again, you fail to see every galaxy are the same. They were all created at the same , and the first generation of star all created heavier element the same way. There is some "super galaxy", but the star inside them are similar to any star in any galaxy.
To find a place where there is potential planet, you just need to find a 2nd generation star that meet certain criteria. >_> Nothing really hard.
Not the kind of energy that worm hole require.Negative energy doesn't exist? There was a book by Kip Thorne from years ago that proposed a model for sustaining a wormhole, the design was crazy, but it is possible.
Explain me what is your ghost radiation thing you mentioned earlier.
Because according to Newton physics, if I go really fast and crash into a dust, it's gonna hurt me badly. In a 1 billion year trip...you will encounter more than 1. Why they need energy for their 1 billion year trip? To maintain the space ship functionality, to keep its habitant alive. Why do they need to be frozen? Well...they will need even more energy if they are not..I dunno, tell me how it's possible to make a 1 billion year trip.Straw man city. Why does the ship need to move fast enough to get damaged from dust? Why do these aliens need energy support (hint: aliens =/= humans)? Why do they need to be frozen?
And to help you in your wormhole research
In 1985, cosmologist Kip Thorne was asked by science popularizer Carl Sagan to devise a hypothetical traversible wormhole. Thorne and his collaborators then created what was a remarkably simple solution that would in theory connect two periods in time. The wormhole would not rip its occupants apart, would stay open for the duration of a trip through, would not freeze its occupants inside, and would not create time paradoxes. However, it would require a never-observed form of exotic matter whose total energy is negative.
Additionally, Stephen Hawking has declared that the wormhole entrance will emit enough radiation to make it unstable or even close it permanently.
That's just silly. Use the Phoenix Gate instead.Originally Posted by Xiona

Impossible? Why? You can't prove it and you know it. I could theoretically devote 1 super computer to each and every star in a galaxy. Again you fail to realize the difference between improbable and impossible. There is also major difficulty concerning the method to collect all the wave length comming from a galaxy and separating object from each other. All galaxies are not the same. Saying that is quite ridiculous. There are many different types of galaxies, it's that simple. Similar types of galaxies may have similar concentrations of elements, but it is definitely not necessary.Again, you fail to see every galaxy are the same. My ghost radiation? I didn't come up with the theory. Don't you know how to use google? Not the kind of energy that worm hole require.
Explain me what is your ghost radiation thing you mentioned earlier.
Ok you may be French, but if you can't understand English please stop trying. You did not even come close to answering my question.Because according to Newton physics, if I go really fast and crash into a dust, it's gonna hurt me badly. In a 1 billion year trip...you will encounter more than 1.
Hey guess what? You're anthropomorphizing aliens again! Why they need energy for their 1 billion year trip? To maintain the space ship functionality, to keep its habitant alive.
More anthropomorphizing... Do you realize why it's ridiculous to anthropormorphize aliens? Why do they need to be frozen? Well...they will need even more energy if they are not..I dunno, tell me how it's possible to make a 1 billion year trip.
It's not anthropomorphizing. The same could be said of transporting kittens, or oak trees.
Next, you'll be saying that by defining oxygen and water as criteria for an inhabitable planet, scientists are anthropomorphizing aliens.
You never explained your reasoning, you just said what aliens could do in your fictional world that doesn't follow physics laws.My story hasn't changed once. You're the one saying aliens would look at humans via a telescope, not me. I explained my reasoning a few posts ago, read them again and stop putting words into my mouth.
As for using telescope, it's what they would use to detect distant object.
"A telescope (from the Greek tele = 'far' and skopein = 'to look or see'; teleskopos = 'far-seeing') is an instrument designed for the observation of remote objects. The term usually refers to optical telescopes, but there are telescopes for most of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation and for other signal types."
What do you suggest they use to detect distant object to make their computer model? A smelloscope?
Yes I did explained it. It's statiscally impossible to travel 1 billion years because unavoidable collission with small or bigger object will happen. You didn't.
Before you ask me to explain what "statiscally impossible" mean,I'm talking about the possibility to roll face on a coin billions time in a row. There is many other issue that would arise if you made a similar trip.
If they are doing a 1 billions years trip, it means there technology isn't magical, and not that advanced compared to our...so yeah, they don't have that "magical" technology to keep them going without any problem. If they have "magical" technology to go faster than light and make wormhole, than it doesn't matter since they broke physics laws...so they can do what they want.
Speculation. [/quote:95b16][quote:95b16]Not exactly how far, but in a limited environment, our technology is going to cap sooner or later. It's safe to assume it's going to cap before we reach a level able to destroy the universe (infinite energy source), or attain the speed of light.
So, in a limited environment, your technology won't cap? >_> You are retarded if you think there is no "cap". One could argue the universe is infinite, but to access that "infinite", you need infinite energy, which is redundant.
[edit]
Look at the size of our recent tools to analyze cosmos and everything. They are kilometer big, huge undergroud labs and the like. Next step is going to be Earth sized lab? Than what?
And all of that is for observational purpose only, there is very few applications that are born from those studies. Our technology at one point won't be able to keep up with the progress our model are doing. I've no doubt we will last a while in cosmology...forever. No.
You never claimed it was suposed to be a perfect model, however it has to, if you want to obtain the result you are talking about.Galaxies are suprisingly flat. Anyways where did I claim this was a supposed perfect model? Perhaps you should go back and read what I've typed a few 50 more times.
In your situation, aliens race are heading toward Earth because they detected it.
Support this claim with a source please, because it's wrong. All galaxies are not the same. Saying that is quite ridiculous. There are many different types of galaxies, it's that simple. Similar types of galaxies may have similar concentrations of elements, but it is definitely not necessary.
[edit]
And for god sake, don't come up with "different shaped galaxy" like you probably thought. It has nothing to with what compose it. Also, don't bring up "10 billion away light years galaxy made of young star" like you did twice already.
Yes, when you talk about observing an earth like planet in a distant galaxy, it has to be "hard". Your method to find a planet like Earth were retarded and uneficient.>_______> did I say it was hard?
I used google and found nothing about ghost radiation thank you very much. That's why I'm throwing back the ball at you and asking you to explain it to me, since you came up with that postMy ghost radiation? I didn't come up with the theory. Don't you know how to use google?
Oh yeah, I forgot aliens were fucking magical being who defy physics laws. Sorry.Hey guess what? You're anthropomorphizing aliens again!
If you want to talk about being that defy physics laws, let's talk about being from another dimension...okay? Your definition of aliens is the one we see in StarWars, StarTrek or any science fiction novel. Guess what? Those aliens species can't exist, it's a fiction.
Now, answer my question and explain me what a "ghost radiation" is, and what wormhole model you are talking about that is doable and require "normal" amount of energy..
Wow Kaylia, you suck at google...
http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/gr-qc/pdf/0202/0202059v1.pdf
There's a paper on ghost radiation formed wormholes, no I haven't read it all yet.
That's in the 1st paragraph of the paper. Like I said I haven't gotten much farther, so you'll have to read it for yourself.Traversable wormhole space-times are found as static, spherically symmetric solutions to the Einstein equations with ingoing and outgoing pure ghost radiation, i.e. pure radiation with negative energy density.
Just thought I'd give you a lesson on google, lmfao.
