Wouldn't the amount of energy needed to actually stop the car going at the speed of light in a frictionless environment be fairly large (lol)? Thats bound to get pricey.

In terms of miles, I think its like 120,519,500,000,000 miles away.

If there is alien life out there, I wish they'd just be more advanced than us, but at the same time really benevolent, and just seek us out already. It'd really save us a lot of time to just get the whole Star Trek "first contact" outta the way.

Would be more fun if they're in stone age, you could just bring a gun or a flash light, they'll worship you for being able to kill with pointing and getting light out of nowhere.

Well im not completly certain if its anything special, if anybody knows more on this field care to splain the rammifications(sp?) of this?

It's a first, and it's kinda amazing they managed to detect something of that size, but it's not really surprising. The current planetary model indicate that Earth-like planet are very common, they are just extremely hard to detect due to their size and distance.

That said, Venus and Mars would fit in that category with the "standard" mentioned. (except for the temperature, but it's just a question of distance from its star)

I'd love to find a society living back in like Rome/Sparta/Athens, but if it was like only as developed as the stoneage/cavemen, then fk that.

Its exciting to me that they're pretty confident the conditions for water are right on the planet, and that the big question is whether its a fully covered water-planet or covered in mountains like Earth.

If the universe IS ever-expanding, we aren't the first, because there'd undoubtedly be millions upon millions upon millions of planets like earth with intelligent life... although if you think of it like that, the universe being ever-expanding seems unlikely, since there'd probably be a more advanced form with technology which should have contacted us by now.

Well, considering how the brink of the universe and the center of it are probably rediculously unstable if our model of it is in any way accurate, I'd say there's a certain amount of time that's been distributed to areas of "intelligent life". Simply, we've had sort of the same amount of time to evolve as other potential "intelligent life forms"?

My argument is impossible to determine, though, since we literally have almost no understanding of how the universe works or is laid out. So, eh, food for thought?

But yeah, this is really interesting. I hope I live long enough to see extraterrestrial contact. There has to be something out there, y'know?

Going on the idea that the Universe is infinite then there are probably countless civilizations out there widely ranging in how developed they are. Since we haven't come into contact with any other civilizations yet chances are we're not even close to a race that can travel the galaxy in one generation of their life time or even cares to look for other races of life for that matter. I love to hear news like this but unfortunately the chances of me living to hear specific info on this planet's atmosphere and surface conditions are next to zero.

Why is the world "not ready"? As long they don't come in with phasing gun to destroy us, I don't think people would mind if there was an official contact with aliens race. Yeah, you will get a few freak here and there who overeact, but I don't see the population of Earth being affected too badly by something like this. Actually I think it would be a wonderful ego check on mankind, who often believe they are at the top of everything.
