Your gained-not-lost argument needs a little work though, because it can be applied to casual gilselling. Would you have a problem with a successful crafter who sold a few mil every month to pay the subscription fee? Or maybe upgrade his gaming rig? I'd tend to think so.

actually i don't. even before i started playing FFXI (my first MMO), i know of friends IRL who played Lineage and than Lineage II and one of them would get bored and "cash out" his character than he would make a new one and play again, he probably did it like 5 times before he quit for good.

so i've always been desensitized to casual RMT. as long as they still play the game for fun and not as a job and not directly infringe on other players, who am i to judge?

Which is why BG is saying "Stop buying our members," because outside influences are attempting to act as a breaking point to the entire individualist/collective match.

i have no ill-will towards the people who sold their accounts for selling their accounts. i'm happy that some of them actually got something back for it. it annoys me to a degree that some of them did so without alerting us, but i have been equally annoyed at people who did that and didn't sell their characters.

That's the way it is. To SE it's illegal as to any country producing your own money is. Of course it effects FFXI on a much larger scale, but, they can't just throw the "dirty gil" in the pockets of Joe Smoe.

I realize of course, that the actual removal of gil has an impact on the economy; but I've started to wonder how much the apparent 'effect' of all this gil banning is the result of perception by players who read "2.8 billion gil was destroyed today" in the announcement. This last banning was what? maybe 80~million per server? That's probably only a good month's worth of dynamis/limbus in terms of 'normal' gil-sink activity - but I've lost count of the number of people I've run into on my server who think this is going to do something drastic to the economy long-term. Perception is a powerful tool: if enough people believe the economy should be / is deflating, guess what? it'll deflate.

Now, if SE were to keep banning gil every quarter...
